  • Advice on selling original art

    Hi Guys,

I’d like to ask you your help to figure out how I can sell my original art.

I tried several time in the past without success and now that I’m drawing the Image title Near Death I tried again, but I couldn’t sell a thing neither this time.

You can have an idea of what I’m trying to seel looking at the link below or giving a look at my DeviantArt gallery (my signature):

    http://guglielmini.daportfolio.com/

Usually my price is 50 USD a page, but I have to add 20 USD for international shipping…The cost of the shipping remain the same more pages you buy , the only constrain the shipping has not to be higher than 1 kg. (2.2 lbs?)

I'd like to send together with the page also the A4 (Letter size, copy paper quality) original pencil study of the page when possible

May you let me know your opinion about what I can do differently for being able to sell?

I’m open to suggestion and honest opinion, so feel free to tell me yours.

First off, you should be charging a LOT more than 50 USD per page. I'm not just saying that to be nice -- it's a simple fact. People with far less skill than you have will sell their work for far higher prices than that. I've seen it at nearly every con I've ever been to.

Giving away the pencil study pages as an 'added bonus' only strengthens the idea that they should cost more.

From what I've seen in the past, I would suggest prices like the ones listed below are closer to what you should be asking for:

$115 for a page where nothing much happens.
$150 for a decent page with a bit of action.
$230 for a super page with tons going on

If you're set on charging $50 a page though - you can sign me up for one - because I'd definitely take one at that ridiculously low price!!

Take a look at this page - http://noonemournsthewicked.com/original-art-sales/ It's a page where Richdraws (PJ member) is selling original pages from 'No Place Like Home'. He lists different prices for each page - and I think they're all very reasonable - for the amount of hours and effort that went into each of them.

So, don't undersell yourself, Simone. Price according to time, effort and quality.

You can only sell your art if there is a market for it. For instance I haven't heard of Near Death, so I'm not in the market to buy it.
Now if you had a blog I followed and saw it develop, then I might be interested.

The prices Beastie mention are a good guide. However, if the art is not on a popular title and you haven't sold it at those prices, then you may have to take less.

Really thanks to both of you.
Dean: What you're saying make sense, choosing a different price depending on the board (what's in it and the work needed) sounds right. Rich sample is an approach I like thanks for sharing!

Symson: I see what you mean and I agree. I think one of the best place I can do it is DA because who watch me there know Near Death very well and saw ND pages very often.

I just received the new that ND will be published in Italy at the end of October and I've been invited to a con where they advertise the publishing. It could be a good opportunity to bring my original and try to sell them there too. I need to work on your advices.

        Thanks again

I'm heavily involved in the buying/selling/trading original artwork on comic art gallery, and the market isn't that great imho.

50-100 is really where should be at. I know that sucks to hear, but otherwise you will probly sit on those pages for awhile.

Thanks for you advice. That's the reason why I'm trying to sell them cheaper. However pricing them in more tailored way sounds something I like and makes sense.

Do you think the fact they're inked over cyan pencil should reduce the price?

There are corrections in most of them (I paste the correction over) Do I have to notify it and it's an impact on the price?

None of those should impact the price imho.

Although it is best to put all those things in the description

Let me give you links to 3 of the bigger art brokers, and you can use them as a template
