  • Mixed Media Demos

Demos that I did for my Mixed Media class. Did them all start to finish in front of the class.. each one start to finish took under 3 hours.... Cutting paper takes much longer then drawing..
I will post the other media demos as I complete them...

Did you use a projector? Theyre remarkably accurate.

No. I hand drew them in pencil in my sketchbook, scanned the drawings in and mirrored the drawings in photoshop (flipped the image horizontally). I printed the flipped drawing out and toned the back of the printout with white chalk and transferred the drawing onto the black paper. Then I cut out the white areas.. Once I cut them out I flipped the black paper so that the messy looking chalk transfer was on the back of the black paper... I started the drawing at the beginning of the class and went through the whole process while my students where either watching or working on theirs.. The class is 3 hours and I was doing the demo, answering questions and reviewing student work while I was creating the paper cut-outs... nothing like multi-tasking!

Watercolor Demo that I did today... I'm recording all of the demos that I'm doing.. I'm gonna edit the videos down, narrate them and post them on an unlisted channel on Youtube... Once I start to upload them, I'll post the link here as well.

The Sweeney Todd and Mad Hatter videos are set to Private for a little bit longer.. but I think you should be able to view the videos with the link... If you try and have problems just let me know and I'll figure it out..

I decided to do another one for today's class... Iron Mike Tyson...
I also did one of Marilyn Monroe, but I'm not really happy with that one...I might have another go at it in the future...

I'm having my students paint their pets (or their family member's pets) both of these were painted in front of the class.. both were done in watercolor with some white ink added afterwards.. For the cat I added some white china marker (grease pencil) as well...

If anyone is interested the video of the dog painting is here:

I wanted to be done with the pet portrait stuff.. but my wife insisted that I paint my daughter's bunny.. So I obliged... This one went quickly and I did enjoy creating it...
Next demo will be cooler.. I hope.

Prep drawing for my next 2 demos.. I'm going to be using acrylic, matte medium and colored pencil to finish them.. A student requested Venom and Carnage.. So I obliged. Haven't seen the 1st or 2nd movies yet.. Will get to it... eventually.

My finished Carnage and Tom Hardy Venom art demo pieces.. I tweaked the Carnage one a bit, b/c I wasn't happy with it previously.. I also taught the students how to cut a mat..
These pieces were fun and I like how they look hanging together.. I recorded the process.. I will post it later... got to get some freelance work done in the meantime though... I've been making some progress on a indie comic.. working with a colorist to get some of the pages finished.. Hopefully I'll be able to post them soon.
