  • Batman & Spiderman (2 pics)

So hello PJ, long time no post...I've been behind the scenes refining my style and practicing, I hope that it has paid off. I'm working on a couple of pics at the moment, but these 2 are the nearest completion, so I thought that I would go ahead and show them now to get help before they are finally "finished".

The first is Batman and Poison Ivy; this is a re-do of a picture that I was working on a couple of months ago. I was unhappy with it, so I decided to start over. A couple of things bug me about it, like his bat logo, and his right (our left) leg @ the knee. Poison Ivy is going to have plant/flower "tattoos" all over her, a la the new Bat game coming out. Any other thoughts?

The second is a re-imagining of a painting I found online. I was searching Google to get inspiration of Spider-man swinging for a picture that I am drawing for my sister, and came across a painting of Spider-man and Mary Jane kissing on a building. I was so enamored with the layout and feel of it that I decided to re-draw it for myself, and change a bunch of stuff. That's why you see MJ with tats and everything, cause well-I just wanted it for my wall lol. Anything look crazy out of place on this one? I will be adding his webbing and a b/g tomorrow hopefully, but is there anything I've missed?

I wouldn't say Batmans head is too small he just has no back of his head. And as for other crits I'd say Batman and Ivy(?) look very stiff theres not much life to their poses Ivy sort of feels living but Batman kind of looks like a mannequin, As for the Spidey piece I see what you're going for they're swinging through the night making out, however I can't tell which bodypart belongs to who and the general torso area I can't really tell any definition of anything.

I've got a few critiques for you:

The gesture of Poison Ivy's pose kinda makes her look drunk, and needing Batman's support to stay on her feet. Like they are coming out of a bar or something and either batman's about to get lucky or she'll puke all over the batmobile. I'm not saying that to be mean or funny, it was just my first impression of what was going on based on body language and the expression on her face.

Batman's leg anatomy is also a bit spotty. With his leg basically straight on, it looks like you've drawn the his left (our right) calf muscle from a profile view.

On the Spiderman piece, his hands are huge. MJ's right hand is bent at a rather severe angle.

You spot blacks very well, but the anatomy and proportions of the structure could definitely use some work.

The Spiderman one is hard for me to read what is what. I had to look for awhile to find out whose apendages were who's, and spidey looks a little chunky. Batman looks like the guy you see at a halloween party who didnt really want to come. With his r. arm not being fully extended add some more tricep. I like Poisen Ivy with the short hair. keep pluggin away.

the logo on the back of spiderman seems to be in the wrong spot. its supposed to be centered, but the way you have it it looks like its more on his side.

There are some anatomy issues here in both pics that tend to draw my eye.

Batmans shoulder is too big and his tricep is too small. His head is not really shaped correctly, it looks as if his mask is too big for his head. The detail/shading looks great. I think there may be too many wrinkles in both outfits for bats and spidey. It makes it look as if the outfits are too big for the characters. There shouldn't be wrinkles in spandex when the character is standing and very little when they are flexed or bent.

Spidey has some serious anatomy concerns. His hands are very large it seems. Its probably his perspective or angle but its very hard to read where or how he is postioned in the pic with MJ. The bottom leg of spidey? I can't figure out how its attached to his waist.

My only advise would be to work on your anatomy. You have skill but you also have some areas that could benefit from more practice.

                  Keep posting!!!!

I agree with everyone about the anatomy issues. You have some nice pencil skills going on here, but the illustrations are not depicting what they say there about. For instance the Batman and Poison Ivy picture. Ivy looks more like Submariner's Sister. Batman doesn't look like Batman, yeah its his costume, but not his characteristics. Maybe to portray the characters personalities, have Ivy with vines starting to wrap around Bat's ankles. As for Bat's, he needs to be more BATMAN. For reference look how professional artists have portrayed these two DC characters.

As for Spidey and Jane, again look at reference pictures for movement and maybe women's shoes. Also for a kissing embrace and show that in your picture.

                    Nice Start.

Everyone's mentioned the anatomy issues and I totally agree. You have a phenomenal eye for filling in the blacks. I just can't stop looking at Mary Jane's tats!

                        thanks guys!

thank you for all of the help everyone! it means a lot! i'm working on finishing these up soon, so i'll def. take everyone's crits into account! if anyone cares, i'll be coloring these like i did the spider-man picture in the finished section, so yeah...should be a fun time!

p.s.-when looking at the spider-man picture, i just want to say that they will be leaning against a window on a building; also, i should have fixed the anatomy/pose problems on the picture, unfortunately i stayed tooo close to the original that i found lol...all of these issues will be fixed in the finals though...thanks!

I'd venture to say, grayrus, that he's a bit focused on his own work at this time to take commissions, that's why my boss understood when he was unable to commit to a project with us; disappointing yes, but perfectly understandable.
Anyhow, love your work as usual Shaun.
