  • Ms Marvel Costume Redesigns

Got done re-reading all of my Ms Marvel trades. I love this character.

I have also been horrified by a good 70% of the DC redesigns. Especially when they attempt at cutting back the sex appeal in the women costumes. I understand making the ladies dress less risque but some of these are just bad design. I must not be the only one cause i have seen a huge influx of redesigns on the web and figured I'd take a stab at it myself. Now keep in mind I think Ms Marvel has a great costume as is. These are from my sketch book. I have been trying to sketch with just a brush pen recently for fun.

    Left design:

In making this less risque I went with booty shorts cut and capped sleeves. Its not much but its something. This design is more influenced by all the different costumes that she has worn over the years. Has a swimsuit color cut reminiscent of the cut on her modern and Binary costumes. Threw in color bands on the gloves and boots. Used the Marvel symbol instead of the lightening bolt since I have no clue why she has a lightening bolt on her. Instead of putting it in the middle like she has in the past I put the star over her left breast like the stars were on her Binary costume.

    Right Design:

Specifically trying to mix up the Lightening costume. Pretty much just put the lightening over the shoulder. Mainly cause I hate trying to get the damn bolt to look right going over her bosom. Also put color bands on her gloves and boots for more color.

Good point about the lightning bolt -that always confused me. I alyas thought her costume was navy blue and not straight black, so that seems a bit off. Besides that, very nicely done. I saw one redesign where someone just got rid of that silly sash, and it was already a huge improvement from the current outfit.

I am also a fan of the risque costumes especially on invulnerable women like wonderwoman, Powergirl, SheHulk and ms marvel cause they dont rely on the costume protecting them. However on people like Huntress and her ab window is just bad design. One knife cut to the stomach and she's bleeding out.

Her costume was navy blue before she became Binary after she returned her powers were severly cut back and she wore black instead of blue and has since. It must have been an emo-ment in her life. Anyway her powers have since returned but she still wears the black. With that said I think on the left design a blue would've been appropriate because her "Marvel" inspired costume was blue and red.

I think these are hot. Like it a lot
Thanks I wanted to keep them sexy-ish while toning down the blatent sexy.

I think I'd like to see the one on the right with the Marvel star...but centered and much larger.

              Nice work.

I think the loss of the sash inhibits the ability to easy demonstrate motion, when she flys, etc. Personally, I quite like her costume as is, but the one on the left is the on I prefer. Good work!

I'm not really diggin' the faces, Toddoss. There's a masculinity to the heads. A little long in the noses--kind of looks a little like David Duchoveny, to be honest. I don't meant that as an insult--just how they kind of look to me. If you shortened the noses a bit, and took some of the angle out of the jaw lines and chins, I think that would help a lot to give her more of a feminine look.

As far as the costumes go: These are two of the best redesigns for Ms Marvel that I've seen! The first one incorporates elements from her original costume as well as from her black Avengers costume in a way that's extremely successful. The red and black is a STRIKING combo! The second one is really nice also, using red as more of an accent or trim rather than as color statement. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these costumes. As redesigns go, these are both winners! I think I might favor the first one just a little more than the second, but I'd enjoy seeing either in a comic, and I'd enjoy drawing either as an artist. Really nice work on the designs!

As far as whether Ms. Marvel's costume was navy blue or black--it's tough to say. Back in the days of yor, blue was the chosen highlight color for all things black in comics. Grays often printed dark, so blue was a better color choice. Superman's hair, Spidey's pants, etc, were colored blue instead of black for this reason. These things were never originally meant to be blue. If you ever see the original Spider-Man story, it's pretty clear that Spidey was meant to be red and black (like a black widow spider). It was refered to as the "red and blue" costume around the Romita era, when it'd been around a while. I think Peter Park might have referred to his outfit as red and blue long johns or something like that in an issue. Now we think of it as red and blue. Superman has black hair. The blue just maintained depth in the days when a gray might have printed poorly and made things look flat. Bruce Wayne's hair was the same, etc. Getting back to Ms. Marvel though--I think that one could go either way. Blue was still being used to highlight black during the days that Marvel's Capt. Marvel was created and during Ms. Marvel's creation. Blue was still being used on Ms Marvel's costume in the '80s when she had the dark costume with the sash, high books and lighting bolt too. I always thought that costume was black though, instead of blue, because there was much more spotted black in the costume, with only a few smaller areas of highlight.

Regardless, these designs are still on the money, and a good update featuring elements of all the costumes that came before.
