  • Mactir- a little barbarian warrior short story

this is just a little comic experiment, playing with how i render backgrounds and atmosphere. i learned a lot with this already so im looking forward to feedback to see what else i could improve in the future! ( i would like to preemptively apologise to smitty for making him post his tip on how to hold swords correctly! )
as always any and all crits and comments welcome and very much appreciated!

You've really hit your stride with your cartooning style. I think the challenge now is to pump up the drama. Everything is clear and expressive, but you're not selling it as hard as you could be. The last three panels for example, show the head and the warrior with close-mid range straightforward camera shots. Maybe consider something like this:

      1. Just the head groaning and dieing. Blood oozing from its mouth as it curses.
      2. blood splashing on the warrior's boot.
      3. Close-up of the warrior looking back over his shoulder. Maybe his face is in shadow with only his crazed, existential eyes visible. "Curse me?"
      4. Shot looking down from above. Warrior standing there in the entryway in a pool of blood, surrounded by giant vomit and children's remains. "'You're curse is nothing to what my life has become."

Right now it looks like he's just moping, especially since the giant was such a pushover.

        Bryan E.Warner thanks!

battlewraith thanks for the feedback! Yeah I kept it way to safe with the shots, I was figuring out some techniques while working on these and focused more on tweeking the finish instead of working story!

crazyjedichicken In terms of rendering backgrounds (I'll leave figures and storytelling to one side as you didn't mention them specifically), I think you're going in the right direction, but you could do with being a bit stronger in terms of light and shade, and maybe texture, and dial down some of the actual brushwork detail. I like the idea of painted, almost chirascuro-esque backgrounds behind cartoony figures, but maybe do some studies in black and white to get to grips with contrast.

When I did the art for the Lords of War weather and terrain pack (ages ago now), I was amazed at how much you could suggest detail with lighting, even with just a few brush strokes.

FWIW, they were all done in mono to get the contrast looking right, and then coloured afterwards with adjustment layers.

@jim yeah im doinv lots of studies of landscapes at the moment and its amazing how everything can go from "hot pile of crap" to looking decent when it comes to the lighting stage!

Love coloring and that warrior guy. Some things didn't make sense. Puke coming out of nowhere and very low, the guy slashing too low for arm cut, him disappearing in the next panel, him being far away for the head chop to make sense.

humble-tomato yeah i sort of did this straight ahead, going panel to panel without thinking about story telling enough!
@josephdredd thanks! i think the puking panel is the strongest!
