  • Pocket God

I did these pages for an editor at Ape, who publish the Pocket God comic series. Didn't land the gig, but I'm still moderately happy with these pages, considering how unusual the style was. All digitally penciled, and I made up my own little story for the sequence. Critique very welcome, as always.

How'd you not land the gig is my question. Keep rockin' Mr. Masterman.

Ha! Nice! They asked me to do some Pocket God samples as well. Turned out horrible. I never draw this super cartoony stuff so I was completely lost to say the least. Those little buggers are difficult to draw but you really nailed it.

Did the guys from Ape at least give you some feedback? I never heard back from them.

They did, actually, and it was some of the best drawing advice I've gotten in years. David Hedgecock, their EIC, wrote me a long email about how the models look in different circumstances, and it made so many things click for me in terms of cartooning and how to represent form. I've been sending him stuff for years, and he's always been very friendly; his insights here were just amazing, and I feel like they helped me make some big strides in my drawing in general. I edited my pages and sent them back in (these here are the edited versions), but didn't hear back after that. Would have been a sweet gig, but its all good. Cliche though it may be, it was one of the best learning experiences I've had in years.

I'd love to see your PG pages, if you feel like posting them. I bet they are a lot cooler than you're admitting.
