A Sketchier Situation

My main blog is called A Sketchy Situation so this will be A Sketchier Situation where I post the stuff no one ever sees and usually gets thrown out. Will probably mostly be anatomy practice (which I haven't been doing enough of lately) and maybe some process stuff. Shall try to update once a day.



Anywhoo, here are some (mostly) female heads. Was trying to work out what my Harley Quinn would look like for that talent search thing. Ended up with the colored pic but was feeling like I was just polishing a turd with the colors so it's banished to the sketch dump.

Also noticed I was beginning to have a go-to female face and that just won't do. Find it much harder to do an interesting and unique female face while still keeping them semi-attractive. For dudes I found if I keep the eyes at a realistic size you can do anything to their proportions without them looking overly cartoony. With females you want to exaggerate the eyes but then goes into super cartoony territory. I suppose a way around that is to do more realistic eyes. Something to test. Happiest with the third girl down on the left with what I was trying to accomplish.

Yup, a good deal of studying.

Started off with Glen Vilppu's anatomy series of DVDs. I love this man.

(Not one of the straight anatomy ones, but think this is a good video.)

Used Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention to learn to simplify the muscles into easy to remember shapes. (Not 100% certain but feels like he might have learned from Vilppu.) What's cool about him is he constantly updates the book with new lecture sketches. If you have an older version of the book can check his blog to see what you're missing.

Would compare the simplified versions of Hampton as well as comic art to photos of bodybuilders and pure anatomy books like Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form as well as Strength Training Anatomy which isn't an art book but I really like.

So that supplemented with The Complete Guide to Life Drawing by Gottfried Bammes (delving into that more now) and an anatomy centric issue of ImagineFX (similar to how Hampton builds his figures but just different enough).

My underdrawings look verrrrry similar to what you'll find in Hampton's book. Now that I have a decent understanding of anatomy, to study I'll find a good photo and that draw that figure from the skeleton up. If I'm unsure of something will check it against one or a few of the books. Then sometimes do it again from memory.

Still not crazy about the new costume, but it's growing on me.

Test strip I did for the Webcomic Factory back in December 2011 for the Tales of Pizza series. Got the job but decided to pass since it was too time consuming for me to do a strip in color.



Out of that experience I briefly ended up doing my own comic strip called Cliffhanger. Each one ended in a cliffhanger that was stupidly resolved the next week only to end on another cliffhanger. Again and again. Only ended up doing seven of them but had at least 5 more planned out. May go back to this if have the time. One of the gags is too stupid not to ever do.

What would be a good violence against an inanimate object saying akin to pounding the pavement in this case? Stab the paper? Let's go with that. You gotta stab that paper. With a pencil. A lot.




Really regretting how I handled the water in panel two. Looks like a mess. Needs color for things to be clear.
