  • Well, my old flatmate's housewarming party stole me from drawing yesterday, but in exchange we had a great time. Then there was a danger of being late for WSG again, but managed to finish the started piece today.

    • I had already seen the Dragon kid thread before, didn't leave a post there though so I'm going to make it up for you right here. I can see you put a lot effort in painting scales and I completely agree with previous opinions about that 'loose' eye. If you struggle with the scales I suggest using a subtle texture - if you use those in your work, that is, and if you're aiming for a realistic look. I know some people prefer not to use any patterns in order to achieve a cartoon style effect. Do you plan on painting wings and colouring your piece of art? I'd really like to see that, I can imagine this baby dragon lighten by a fire light from the side. Also, the next time you paint something like that you may want to try building the scene directly from the dark (not leaving the blank space behind your dragon, but putting lighter and lighter strokes on the background and getting it into a decent shape). I noticed a similar problem in your other picture, where you can clearly see white spots 'behind' the painted apple. I think my solution could help, but I obviously suggest it only because it works well for me, everyone has a different style of painting
As for your sketches I like your way of shading, plus you seem to see your mistakes and correct them (you mentioned you didn't like the way you drew hands etc.) - it constantly gets better! You practice drawing a lot and it does pay off. After all, as we all know practice makes perfect, so keep it up.
Hope you find anything what I wrote helpful, sorry about possible English mistakes, it's not my native language

      • Hey Harakun, thanks very much for your time and comment, I am really grateful for it. I'm such a newby with digital stuff and it's nice to get hints from somebody of your level.

That texture thing sounds really interesting and definitely something I wanna take a look on. Well, I guess instead of messing around with painter (what I am doing now) I will follow a basic book on it teaching the use of tools and techniques even if most of the exercises are dull still lives in that book. The video tutorial I used for inspiration with the dragon uses a line work to establish the basis and I followed it in that, that's why the white showing through. I'm also thinking of trying the patchy way you suggest, maybe a combo of the two. To start with patches would be better for the shape and depth, so I'm moving towards that. And colouring of the dragon might come as a break from the dull Painter fundamentals book:-)

And your English is fine, and if it wasn't I probably wouldn't notice being Hungarian myself.:-)

        • And as I just said, I feel I tried to take a too big step again when attempted an unreferenced digital painting of Ms Marvel for WSG. So in the end I got a bit angry with it. Didn't want to miss WSG thou, so I put this sketch quickly together. (quickly compared to the hours I spent on the other):

+ more pencil practice: hands from the Loomis book (we are almost friends now:-), some doodle and a more decent drawing of a pirate gal using the artsy poses site's ref photo collection (found the official reference - Rael C, photo by Marcus Ranum: http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/...h-R-8-79831282).

          • So it's me stepping by again, just wanted to say I love the last picture you posted (of a woman with a gun). Great pose and shading as usual! Hands practice drawings look very well too. Glad you found my post useful, I have to say my first attempt to digital painting was simply speaking terrible, so knowing that it's just a beginning of your adventure with computer arts makes it all look really impressive

            • Thanks very much Harakun, I wish I was that confident in rendering:-) That gal is just a referenced pic, from head to toe, but thanks anyway. And also for the support on the kick off of my digital stuff.

              • ....Sentimental posts this weekend....

I find myself doodling in a cartoony style every now and then at work and I'm not that good at it... Well, there is a reason for the cartoony guys, obviously. It's nice enough from my colleagues to overlook my scribbling (when Windows restarts or there is some dead time), but I don't think it would go down well if I drew bikini babes or Conan hack-slashing at work, so cartoons remain the only option. And I was pretty much in a Lion Kingy mood today (watched that rock scene a couple of times).

Also spent some time on Painter practice today following a fundamental tutorial book. At one point it asked me to do scribbles in a number of different brushes, and, for fun I turned it into this forest fella. A bit crappy, but it wasn't meant to be any better.

What was meant to be better is that Scarlett Johansson overpainting using my old pencils that I had done for the celebratory WSG #200. I used a blender and just dull conte and also blended the old pencils in, and I'm quite happy with the result. It still has a lot of issues, but it feels such a big step. I remember how much I loved the pencil drawing back then and now it feels so weak.:-/

                • Nice Scarlett. Are you trying to get on Manji's good side?

Very nice hand studies too. Expressive hands can really enhance a character.

You know Alex, I asked almost the same question from Sean as he came up with the topics and made a direct reference to ScarJo. :-)

                        • Hah:-) There must be something in that chick as it wasn't only me who draw her when the topic was Manji for WSG #200. And now she is here again for #265 - soon she would compete with Wolverine as the most frequent topic for WSG:-)
Thanks for the compliment, glad to hear it from somebody with your skills.
