  • Apple Study II

This is something i did for myself to see if my painting skills have improved. The first apple is from May of this year when i first started to use photo shop and a tablet , and one i did today.
The apple took 15-20 minutes in PS.

They both look good to me. The one on the left lacks some brightness. I don't know if I could say one is really better than the other. How long did it take you to make that first one? Speed can also be an improvement. I do like the highlight one the earlier piece. It shows the uneveness of the surface of the apple even though it appears to be very smooth and spherical.

it's hard to compare..it's apples to apples if you know what i mean....
      ....hmmm.
well, i think the newer one is a little too "unsaturated" but was executed better IMO. it's got a focal point, good highlight etc...but it's lacking a core shadow and reflected core shadow, which would really help the "realism"
good job though, thats impressive to do on a computer...i wish i had a wacom...

Bit sorry to say (since I guess it's the older one) but I clearly prefer the first one (the left one). And for simple reason, it has artistic expression and interpretation to it, whereas the second one looks way too much like ref'd from a photo to me.
For example the left one features these yellow strokes all around the top that are clearly visible as brush/pen strokes, yet are easily recognized as part of the apple as well. Also that highlight to the left, right above the shadow, it ain't just white like a flashlight reflection (contrary to the right apple), instead it features that "unreal" stroke of light red. Another one is the scribbly black outline in parts, which is yet one more artistic addition. Plus that dot in the top right, and last not least the sig fits much better.

All in all this is however nothing but personal preference, both apples are executed flawlessly and it's just me prefering an impressionistic touch over an photographic one.

        Regards,
        Sven

Kewl, no reason to say sorry. I take both as a complement. I was trying to get photo realistic with the apple, but they fact you like the artistic expression in the first one is still faltering.

The first apple actually took a few tries, so prob a hour. So yes speed is def increasing. There are a few things i like in the fist and then the second also i wish i drew them at the same angle better for comparison.
