I did some pencil drawings recently and I thought that I might practice colouring on them. Here's one I've coloured so far. If you have any comments, I would be happy to read them

fantastic! only problem i see is the guy with the knife is very short, given the size of the altar! but really nice work!

Nice. I like it overall..with some size issues.. The girl being a giant for one.. I think you should remove the hooded people at the bottom. They are sinking through the floor, and some of their skull size is tiny. Oh and I believe we should see the other butt at the bottom if her pelvis is tilted that way. Like the coloring too

I like how you used the pencils without ink. I like to draw in ink, but it's nice to see the process without it.

Humble Tomato gave some solid crits, especially perspective. The only thing I'll add is that the woman on the right has a lot of hairspray to keep it that stiff (and going sideways). If she's lunging forward, then you caught it at the exact moment in time, which still looks odd, you'd expect hair to move in many directions unless it was weighed down underwater.

I did struggle with placing figures here I wanted to practise putting multiple figures in perspective but in a way that works for looser drawings and which doesn't require elaborate grids and measuring. When I do those everything gets very stiff and I'm trying to find some middle ground. Eyeballing doesn't seem to work apparently, maybe I have too little experience yet. Any tips/tutorials/thoughts on this issue? Some methods maybe?

As for the hair, my intention was exactly that, to show that she's lunging forward. I guess she's got this Dragon Ball z look a bit

Work hard on both approaches: draw from life and from observation, lots of sketches that have good energy and imperfect, eyeballed perspective. Do formal exercises, measuring and gridding out your perspective, get it really accurate. Do both, and eventually you'll see the two converge. Your loose studies and sketches will have better freehand perspective, and your formal stuff will have more energy.

Also, I just went through some of your other stuff. I'm a fan of how hard you're willing to work to get this stuff nailed down. Youve gotten much better since you first started posting here. I get the impression there's been a lot of hard work happening between your posts here. Way to go!

Also, I noticed the reason the bottom hooded figures look sinking is because of the upper right corner pillar you put in, and that made it look like that is the corner of the room.. thus making the figures not positioned properly.

I tried myself and removed that pillar and made the room look bigger and placed people there too for surrounding effect, and did a quick size correction for the main 2 figures. To me it still looks a bit off because of the couple of oddly tall figures on the far left. but seems okay if you compare with the rest of smaller figures.

Now the composition looks off because the focal point is now a bit outside the rule of thirds... but hope it works in terms of size.... or maybe you and I need a friendly visit from a grumpy old man. :P

Rant -> I went through most of the stuff on New Masters Academy website about perspective (I drew all the diagrams myself too), I did exercises from Robertson's books, Mateu-Mestres, read, reread and drawn diagrams from other stuff like Norling, Watson and a dozen other books and I took architecture drawing classes. Every day, regardless of whatever else I'm gonna draw, I draw at least 1 perspective drawing with multiple figures, switching between outside views and interiors, and still I've just scratched the surface and can barely apply this stuff in practice. I know it's a vast topic but damn it often feels so overwhelming.

Anyway I think the idea of removing the bottom guys entirely might be a good one. And maybe instead of making the altar girl smaller, making the one closer larger would be enough and wouldn't change the composition too much? I'll try it and see how it works.

sdowner, thanks, I do work hard on this, I feel that getting it only more or less right doesn't cut it for me. By the way, I used one of your critiques here on the forum as a guide for coloring

In perspective, what cannot be seen is as important, if not more so, than that which we can see. If we remove the alter, leaving only it's footprint, we see that the executioner is either on his knees or is severely dwarfed from the crotch down.

To avoid this, start by completing the executioner's figure. Now that we know where his feet are we can plan the footprint of the alter and work up.



Keep your VPs away from each other. Distance to the horizon is D=√1.5H where D is the distance in miles and H is the height of the viewers eyes off the ground in feet. If we have the POV of Captain America on the shoreline, our eyes are approx 6' off the ground, VPs are 3 miles away and, most importantly, distance between VPs is over 4 miles.

BUT...

We are not standing on the shore. According to your horizon we are at least 12 feet off the ground which leaves VPs approx 6 miles apart. This does not mean you want a ruler 6 miles long, it simply means you need to get your VPs away from each other. If your VPs are 6 miles apart then the height of the executioner would be about as tall as you've drawn the executioner's ear
