    these are some older works that didn't take as much time, but still my earlier attempts at getting that notorious shading down pat.

              I think that in your attempt to avoid the "Photoshop Look", you're not getting much definition in your coloring. Your color areas come across as sloppy and the shading seems hesitant and random. I think, just for kicks, you ought to try a simple, super clean piece of lineart and try to convey a very strong single lightsource, just once. It will force you to think of the artwork as three-dimensional in every area and open up a new way of looking at your coloring.
