  • Thor!

I drew Thor today, because Thor is really fun to draw. Specifically Chris Samnee & Roger Langridge’s version from Thor: The Mighty Avenger.

Crits would be great on this! I tried to avoid some of the proportion issues I often have with my casual warmup drawings. I think his arms are the same size. Not sure I dig the feet. I took about 90 minutes start-to-finish on this over three mornings this week.

Has a very Ben Caldwell kinda feel to it. The legs and feet are awkward but other than that I like it.

To be specifc.. they feel disjointed in certain parts and parts that should be more or less straight feel like they're bending in ways that undermine the structure of the drawing.
I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it. ~Pablo Picasso

I think you should have made the right wing (his right) on his helmet more visible to create a more recognizable silhouette of Thor.

The only part that really just makes it weird is the right leg where the calf is cut off by the boot.. If you draw a straight line from the knee to the ankle, the shin does not fall upon that line. Otherwise, I do agree that it fits.

I'd loose the tippy toe look. Sneakin' is for Gollum. Get his plant foot flat on the ground.

There is so much I like about this one man. Of course the colors are beautiful. My only 2 cents would be to push the pose a little more. The line of action could run really strong from his left arm to his right leg. But here with his left arm down, you kind of lose that. The grounded feet mentioned above would is very insightful and I agree it would help a lot. Can't wait to see more from you!!

This is great advice! Save the tip toes for more mischievous or whimsical characters. Thor is a god of might, so he should stand firm and strong to better convey that visually.

Thanks, man. Caldwell is an inspiration to me, that's for sure. I wasn't directly influenced by any one particular artist on this one, but I don't doubt he's a subconscious influence.
You're right about that leg. It looked good to me when I did the figure before adding costume, but it looks super wonky now.

Great call, man. It works way better with that.

No, actually! I was trying to just do my own thing. I might have found some of the same solutions he uses in his stuff- I haven't actually checked out his work in a couple years.

Yeah... my wonky, wonky knee joints and overcurved shinbones made it weird. I think I've got it fixed now.

Thanks, man! You're totally right. I'm going to try that.

Yeah, it seemed like a no-brainer once Smitty mentioned it. :-)

I'll get back here with a revised version real soon. Thanks again, everyone.

Here's a revised version that I worked up this morning. I like it much more. Not certain that the repositioned arm is better, though. Having it down reads to me as a more interesting pose- like he's just about to unleash the action. Having it up just seems... a little random. If I'd had it up from the planning stage of the drawing I'm sure it'd be more effective.

Another version with the arm down. I'm torn on this.

I actually like the bottom one better there. His cape isn't cookie-cutter (which would be on model). There is a more youthful appearance and the slightly disheveled cape plays to that. There is a strong diagonal there from his left heel up the the haft of Mjolnir. I would suggest that there is a tangent in there somewhere because it does create a little bit of an optical effect. Perhaps it's the flair coming off of his boot, the left curve of that is tangential to the right side of the haft.

First of all SORRY for messing with your piece, hope you dont mind. It´s just harder for me googling words in english then to make a draw. His new arm looks like bending in an awkward way, can´t see a elbow in there, i also enlarge the legs a litlle bit, but i guess that´s not the style you going for, anyways great piece man.
