  • Black Bolt & Medusa - Colouring process

I've been lucky enough to get involved in an art swap with the uber talented Eric Canete

He asked for a Black Bolt & Medusa pic - and this is what I came up with.

I've posted photos of the piece as I moved through the various stages of production......

Beautiful work as always! I'm always blown away by your pencils and then how much your colours add to them!

Really sick. Nice lines and even nicer color work, he should be very happy with that one.

Gorgeous. How much tweeking do you end up doing in photoshop?

Thanks for all the kind words, guys

Josem - Yeah, all done with watery acrylics. I usually then do my outlines (and additional colour details) with colour pencils - but just did black outlines on this particular piece. I don't often do that - but its a much quicker process - so might start doing it more often.

Ray - After painting a picture and then scanning it in - the very least I'll do is add digital colour washes to enhance/boost the colours. It's 99% likely that I'll add all my heavy shadows with photoshop too. In extreme cases I'll change the entire look of a painted page using photoshop if I think it'll be the most effective use of my time. For instance, I painted the page below with bright colours (as though it were a scene taking place during daylight hours) and then 'made it into a night scene' using dark layers of colour in photoshop.

So, in the original painting, none of the heavy shadows, the dark blue page tones or the headlight beams exist.
