    SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATED VERSION

Plog and I are dueling it out this month over in the Pummels. Thought I'd share it over here too. Crits are welcome. I'm pretty happy with it although I'm trying to figure out how to paint a little more realistically. I think it's got something to do with how I'm painting the light inconsistently or maybe the value relationships needed to convey a more realistic look. Not sure.

    Photoshop over pencil sketch.

Bfowler I think you're right on about the inconsistent lighting. It's kinda tough to nail down exactly where the light source is, except that it's above them. A more dramatic lighting angle, like side-lit, would help to push the shapes too.

Also something to think about, and I'm not 100% sure here, but maybe the whiteness of the snow in daylight, which can be glaring, would blow out some of the mid value range here and bring up the contrast? Like crisp little sparkles on the dragon with deeper shadows all around. Maybe a faint blue tint to all the colors to unify them and put them in the scene. Not sure, maybe something to tinker with.

Electronick - I think you're right on both points. I little more dramatic or atmospheric on the lighting. I'm already working on some variations. I think I need to color the light a little yellow and add some morning or dusk haze/fog. I've gotten some good reference for the type of light I'm going for. Now I just need to apply it consistently across the scene.

Loston - Ahhh, you sure do know how to make a fella feel special. Thanks!

immigrant - I have no idea what you're talking about.

Amazing work. Even the pencils were good, but this painted is first class.

Thanks Elnar. I did some more work on this. Like I said before it wasn't where I wanted it to be. I'm a lot closer with this version below but there still a few areas I'd touch up but I've got to let it go because it's time to start on the next one.

The only thing I hate is I ended up sending the above version to enter in Spectrum because the due date was close. Wish I'd had time to submit the one below.
