Tracker/hunter type character in a hostile, plant dominated world.

I gotta say bovey, that even though I love the rendering and I can't find anything technically wrong with it, I'm just not feeling it.

I think the biggest complaint I have is how static the character is. Her pose doesn't convey a hunter or tracker to me. She's just standing there. Her face is so calm and relaxed, it's like she's taking a stroll out in nature and just noticed a beautiful butterfly. Nothing says this is a hostile planet or environment.

If you're just showcasing the character, then I guess it's fine, but why not just do the turnarounds? And then give us a dynamic presentation of the character in her environment.

Mainly, because I figured I'd work on the basic character design and get a feel for how I want to draw the environment at the same time. This definitely isn't meant to be a pin up, cover or anything like that.

I think it's beautiful. The figure's arm need to relax a bit(like the legs) and lengthened more(elbows to waist), but 'sides that she's HOT! Maybe some clearer layering of the foliage at her feet, but as a sketch it rocks!

Thanks man I definitely agree about the arms.

            Beastie, I blame you.

Maybe you could put her hair in some braids or plaits or something. At the moment her persona doesn't match her armour. And the persona is the actual character.

I think the design is sold and the weapons look nice (not too fantasy, not too sci-fi). However, the character is a pretty common one to find these days. Especially in the wake of the popularity of games like World of Warcraft there is a glut of "Hot Elf or Hot Fantasy Chick" out there.

The good news is, there's an established market for the material. The bad news is it's harder to get recognition in a crowded market.

I'm not saying your concept is bad, it's just going to take something unique to put your head above the crowd.

I could see doing this as a Turok/Land of the Lost kind of thing would be cool. But I don't know what you're shooting for here.

Drawing is nice though . Good Luck!

Yeah, this story definitely isn't in that realm. It's more sci-fi than fantasy and she's just one of many characters that will be in a group.

There's a lot to the story, but basically there is a small group of people trying to survive on a planet where advanced predators have evolved from plant life.

I don't think that at all. I think I just need to make it clear that this is just one character in what's going to be a very detailed world. She's not the concept, just one of many characters in it.

it's a good solid picture. so i'll offer my crits to concept.

Her gear is very standard in appearance from what we're shown. granted, that which keeps us from dying fighting flesh and bone will work against bark and thistle, but the cultural look of the character is down right European in style. I've got nothing against lifting from Earth culture, but if you're going for an alien world look she's not selling it in her design. I don't know the story, so if they have roots on mother Earth then it'd be all good and you can ignore my babble. Also this "looks" like a lot of metal bits over leather? very hot and not very stealthy/nimble.

On the heat, can we assume this plant-paradise is a good bit warmer than our native climes? then, and no i'm not just another manpig....well i am but, she should probably have a bit more breathable attire. Not battle-panties(tm) per se, but she'd probably have a little more exposure than is here. Gotta fine that fine line between protection/comfort/porn.

Last note, i luv her sword/chopper. Given plant enemies and what we can assume about that kind of critter chopping slashing weapons will be prefered, with piercing ones following after. So her staff might be considered fairly useless against such things. If it's just a traveling wacking stick or whatever, that's all good.

Last note. Depending on the technology of her people and what they might have brought with them, or other life forms on the world (are there flesh and blood critters?). Then some parts of her gear migth be made from the same critters she faces, sinewy vines instead of woven straps and stuff like that?

hopefully some of that is usefull to you. I really like those critters btw.

Looks pretty good, Dave. The composition is sound enough, but I have to agree with Plog on this one. Her hairstyle and armor are a little on the blah side. If her hair and armor were a little more interesting, it would go a long way towards making this a better illustration. If she's and explorer type, she might have shorter hair, or wear her hair tied back and out of her face. Would she wear such a bulky armor on a more jungle-like world? I'd think she'd want to be able to move around unencumbered. Maybe a leather or more flexible armor might be better.

The creature drawings below the first one are pretty awesome, man.

PLOG mentioned the staff, which is the first thing that jumped out at me. In such a dense environment, against plant based life-forms, it doesn't strike me as a very practical weapon. Fighting plants would be all about blades and fire, I'd think.

Really nice rendering, as usual, and I really like those creature concepts.
