  • 40's cap

This was supposed to just be a redesign. I ended up liking where it was going, and I was having way too much fun with the nib-pens, so I finished it up.

Deleter makes some real nice nibs. I still use Speedball Hunt 102's for quite a bit of hatching and such, but you can feel the difference in the metal Deleter uses. Deleter nibs glide on the paper, whereas Speedballs nibs kinda feel like fingernails on a chalkboard.

This is bad-ass! I love the punch and the beaheading. Your rendering is really nice, and I dig the old-school-Cap design- it's very functional, but still obviously Cap.
If I had to crit. anything, his left leg (coming over the sandbags) looks a little short, mostly in the thigh.

Overall, though, this is a stellar drawing. Great work!

Thanks for the kind words SB! I think you're right, the foreshortening on the thigh looks off. I think if I had wrapped the wrinkles in his pants around his leg rather than diagonally along its length, it wouldn't have killed the depth.

I gotta remember to check my pencils in the mirror more often before I start inking!

Love the art, but hate the beheading.

              Thanks for the comments guys!

Popninja: Do you mean you hate the beheading as in " it looks wrong", or as in "thematically I disagree with this piece, as killing is abhorrent and represents the basest evil in the human soul?" 'cause if it's the second one, dude they're nazis! Even Indiana Jones had no problem offin' himself some Nazis! Either way, glad you like the rest of it

I just think, in 2010, it seems to be the easy way out in EVERY violent piece you see. It's basically been done to death. Just my opinion, though. Like I said, I love your art here. You're really good and should post much more art, Mr. "Mar 2007" Join Date. WTH is up wit' dat?!

PN: I see where you're coming from, over the top violence is kind of a thing lately (Mark Millar, anyone?). My day job is freelance illustration, and as yet I haven't been hired for any mainstream comic type illustration, it's all cartoony stuff, or a more "editorial" style, very tame subjects and all. I assume that's why when I start scribbling on my own, it trends toward violent themes. And boobs.

Damn, 2007? I gotta stop with this lurking shit and start posting.

Golgotha: Man that's the one thing about the old-school cap design that drives me crazy! Who puts wings on their helmet, honestly?! I mean what is he, Captain Hummingbird? To each his own, I suppose

Again, thanks for the comments everybody, much appreciated!

Nice job on the illustration, liche_king. I like the movement and the composition, however the steel-pot helmet on Cap's head doesn't look right. It actually looks more like a German stahlhelm than the type that the U.S. Army issued. You got the German soldier's MP40 correct and the mortar and luger look authentic enough. There is a ton of reference on U.S. WW2 equipment online, fix that helmet and you'll have a real winner here (might also put a stenciled looking A on the front of it?)

Huge successful action in this piece-- meaning something's being done and it feels like it's happening! I totally agree with Pop on the head thing... Makes it silly to me. I would mind a really large gash in the guys neck to his spine, or half his face's skin peeled up by a shield bash, but complete deCAPitation (hahaa) is weird to me. My crit would be that Cap looks fairly small and scrawny for USA's #1 Nazi-fighting-machine. He actually looks same size if not smaller than the two Nazi grunts he's fighting. Great drawing though!

Nicely drawn. Has a Severin feel to it. That's a compliment.

A few things. Heads look too big. Sometimes the wrinkles are poorly done. Cap would never deCApitate anyone. (Good one necenarro!)

Actually, he did deCAPitate Baron Blood... Mind you, he was a vampire, and that's kind of the procedure with them. I agree he'd never behead a person. That's pretty much warcrime material.
