  • Beta Ray Bill vs The HULK: PUMMEL

Well since it has been over a year since I posted a finished piece up here I thought it was time to blow the dust out of my pencil so to speak. This is my August Ranked Match piece for PUMMEL. The topic was BetaRayBill Vs... , and being inspired by the Planet Hulk Movie I picked the Hulk.

Please throw some C&C my way on this one as I am trying to work the rust out and came back to PUMMEL because I felt like my skills were weakening up a bit.

Glad to have you back spidey. Its about time man!

One thing I could comment on is the landscape that is at the bottom of the screen, it feels like its right next to Hulk and Ray.
Since there is supposed to be alot of distance here I would drop the detail down alot more and lighten those lines even more. And the the ground down at the very bottom should be just shapes of color, I would do any detail besides that.

I think your facial exspressions have gotten better, and I like how you shaded Ray's cape instead of drawing in the folds, really helps. I think the biggest thing here is the lack of contrast in strong darks and medium tones, everything has the same tonal value. I think if you made the darker parts darker that will help give separation between Hulk and Thor. As well, throwing some darker tonals in those clouds will help too.

Really awesome to have you back and with a finished piece as well!

Thanks a tone for the input pigeon. I completely agree with the contrast issue and believe it or not I was REALLY trying to work on it, but I found myself running out of time and I didn't go back and darken it up in the foreground as much as I should have and I am still struggleing with making my line weights really distinct so as to make the piece pop more. I was actually trying to go a little more tonal on this one as well with less hatching and feathering ... it may be something you see more form me in the future. I really appreciate your input. Maybe it will help me keep just ahead of you during your return to PUMMEL ... lol.

I struggle with the same thing man, line weights suck.

Overall I really like the piece. Just needs some minor tweaking to make it even better I think.
what kinda of pencil are you using to do these in?

I was using a mechpencil for the basic line work ... it is honestly the one I have the best control with ... I lost one while away on vacation and I could barely draw a line ... lol. I was using a normal wood pencil HB and 2H for the shading.

sorry for not posting back, it didnt come back on my new posts link.

What I was going to say was to use a 3-5 HB pencil for shading,or even better, go get a Carbon pencil for even a more darker shade and use the HB for your outlines and varying lineweights.

I use the H pencils for the buildup then I will use a softer HB pencil or darker graphite to do the lines and shading.

            Just something to think about.
