  • Tarzan !!!

As often, an unplanned sketch that turned into something else.

I tried a more painterly approach than usual here.

Dig it . The paint is nice ,I don't know how ya pull it off . Tarzan looks really gritty , like someone living in the jungle should .

I'm not sure what's happening with his back leg, seems to vanish, maybe you could've made it hang down or something...also the cropped hand was a no no...

but this is quite the excellent piece, I dig the painterly approach you took
      I'm awesome...you're welcome...

The randomness of the colours and highlights etc creates the perfect atmosphere. There's a great sense of depth to this too - almost like I could actually reach inside the picture.

        Really cool

Well I have to say I'm loving this one, Jel! I do have a few minor crits for you though, so I hope these will help.

I appreciate the stooped over ape-like posture of Tarzan a lot, but Tarzan's neck looks to be far too elongated and stretched, especially since his head is also turning in the manner you're depicted. Frankly, it just looks downright uncomfortable and a bit unnatural. I suggest that you might want to move his head back to the left a bit more. This will make things appear a little more natural.

I also think another aspect of the drawing that could benefit from a similar adjustment is Tarzan's right shoulder. It's riding too low on the torso, making his right trapezius muscle look incredibly long and stretched. Raising the shoulder upward a bit will improve the drawing.

This is one of my favorite images from you in a while, man, but I think the anatomy tweaks will only improve an already outstanding illustration. Here's a quick Photoshop image putting my suggestions to practice. I hope you find this helpful:

          Take care, dude!

Well, I don't agree with Bruce Lee. I find the picture well as it is done. I like it very much and I think part of its interest is breaking these anatomic rules in a good sense.
The painting remembers a bit Simon Bisley.
            Good work!

I disagree with that Bruce Lee guy too. He's an ass!

              (It's what I heard... Heh.)

Best of luck with it, Jel.

                  Thanks for the comments!

                  > DogSoldier: Thanks, that was what I was going for, glad you are receptive to it!

                  > Ninja216: He's using his leg to grab the trunk and stabilize himself... Maybe it's not as obvious as it should. As for the hand, it's not cropped at the wrist which would've been really awkward, but only at mid-hand. This overlapping was done intentionally to increase the sensation of depht.

                  > Beastie: Thanks man, really what I was trying to do!

                  > Loston: thanks for the helpful and comprehensive critique as usual. I really appreciate it. I see what you mean, and I agree with your points, especially the pulling back of the head which would indeed take care of the shoulder length to an extent too without losing the slight exaggeartion I was going for (I wouldn't pull it up as much as you though ). Unfortunately, this piece is far too advanced for me to change anything drawing-wise, all I can tweak are the colors. Oh well, live and learn!
Hope it's not too distracting nevertheless, and glad you like it despite all that!

                  > mikeljanin: Thank you man. I have absolutely no problem with people critiquing my work, especially when it is done as well as by Loston. I was going for exaggeration indeed, but I might have been pushing it a bit. Glad you like it And Bisley is the single man that made me want to draw, back in the day when I discovered Slaine, so I really appreciate that some of his influence is found here.

                  > angeltread: Thanks! But as said to Loston, unfortunately I can't really change anything to this now.

I love the colors you chose. I also like his body language and sinewy body structure. Very ape-like and believable. I do agree with Loston's points though.

                    Still, I dig it

I'm loving the colors and the atmosphere.

The tweaks would definitely help, but if you left it as is, it would still be an outstanding piece.

Obviously I'm alone with the shoulder and neck thing.
Although I admire people like Bisley or Jel that knowing anatomy rules, can break them to give energy, attitude and so to a character. Check Bisley and you know what I'm talking about...

Gritty stuff. It has a bit of a Conan vibe going there, I think.

Good paint experiment here Jel! I really like the colors palette you choose and the combination of cold/warm colors.

I'm with Loston about the anatomy feedback, but i understand what mike is saying (at least I think I got his point). You drew the Tarzan anatomy in a very Bisley/hogart way....not usual positionand the anatomy is really "sculpture-ish" there.

the reason I'm with Loston is because the Trzan look is still to Human. I was with Mike comment if you drew a more "ape/distorted" tarzan looking.

I hope you understand what I mean
