Batman piece I started as a warm up for a benefit donation. I liked where it was going, so I finished it.

Very cool, but when you put this much detail in the rest and do it that loose on the hands it kind of looks like he's wearing mittens. Also I'm not entirely sure why he's grabbing his own cape. Really like the background and the gargoyle.

that doesn't make me more sure that just confuses me further. if I had a cape I wouldn't go to the trouble of reaching back and grabbing it for no apparent reason, I'd be far too busy screaming at children.

He does it a LOT. It's just one of those things that looks cool and doesn't really need to make a ton of sense, which is why so many people draw him doing it (ignoring that nickguy used recent examples all from the same artist...).

As for the drawing, only real issue I have is that his pecs look way too pushed up. With the way he's leaning down you should see more of the top of his shoulders and the pecs would come down lower. I really like the effects on the city and the whiteout smoke at the bottom.

Very nice work! I agree that it's very Jim Lee-ish. Not in a bad way. I think you could push more of the wash effects onto batman as well to make it more cohesive.

I agree with Lit on the pecs, but will also add that the head looks like it's a bit to large proportion wise.

The reason Batman is sometimes depicted clenching his cape is simple: It's a big ass cape. When he's on a rooftop 40 stories up, the wind would surely take over, if Batman didn't try to restrain his cloak every now and then. Why he'd need to clench it while in the Batcave--well, there's no good answer for that one. Call it "artistic license".

Thanks for checking it out everyone! I was pretty happy with the way that it turned out!

dfbovey and literacysuks1: I agree... after a day of being away from it I noticed that as well.

I guess as far as the whole cape grabbing debate, I just feel like it is a dramatic pose. I think that often if we looked at a lot of the "hero poses" in real life they'd look a little silly.

dfbovey: This was one of the first times that I really tried to mess with any sort of wash...I'll be working on the technique for sure!

Okay fine I'm sold on the cape holding thing, but then I have to say that in this particular picture it didn't work too well because to me it sort of looks like he's lifting his cape up so he can smell it. But none the less pretty damn great pic.

I agree my favorite part is the gray washes - they came out awsome!

I agree with all the crits so far, and would add that I would of included a few more highlights connecting the part of the cape Bats is holding to the rest of the cape. It's not a big thing, but it would give the cape a more solid feel to it, as it looks like he pulled a clump of goo from nowhere with just the highlights you have.

And like Dave, I would love to see the bg washes get another pass to darken up the forward elements of it to better connect it with the overwhelming black of the foreground.

                        Really nice work.
