  • [Looking for Work] Searching For A Full-time Art Job - Need Suggestions On Who Might Be Hiring!

    Hey guys!

Penciljack.com has been one of the best sites I've joined, and it's one that has helped me tremendously as an artist. I need your help once more.

I've worked at my job for over five years now as a healthcare provider, and I've reached the point that the time has come for me to move on. The job has sapped my creative passion a great deal, it has brought a great amount of stress into my life, and as a result, it has begun taking its toll on my health. I'm moving on.

My dream is to be a full-time comic book artist, preferably working on a creator-owned project of my own. I'm currently working on my Megapower book, but until I'm able to realize that dream, I'm focusing my attention at working a full-time job. I'm trying to find art-oriented jobs, such as storyboarding for animation studios, game design illustrations, advertising agencies, or smaller publishers who regularly publish for profit (an area of which I've prepared a portfolio of sequential pages for). Anything, really.

If any of you know who might hire artists full-time, I'd love to hear your suggestions! Feel free to post and list them here. Also, if that company requires it, I'm very open to moving from Hawaii to pursue a career with them.

    Sincerely,

    Carl

I think you just need to get your work and name out there first and foremost.

As I understand it, the way the art market works now (more so than in the 80's), is that you don't need to live near your employer at all times. So relocating from Hawaii may not be required if you can find an in somewhere. Where have you been looking for work?

Perhaps someone can point you in the direction of a resource that will narrow down the field and job opportunities.

My advice is never work for free or on spec (which most of times ends up being work for free). Avoid backend deals or any kind of offer that includes working for free. No matter what bs they tell you such as "no payment now but potential for long term paid work", "no payment but great exposure".... It ALWAYS ends up meaning that you invest your time, efforts and skills on a project whereas the "employer" is taking no risk AT ALL. If the project fails, you are the only one who looses the initial investment.

Remember, unpaid work only leads to more unpaid work. It´s better for you to make no money at the begining and work hard on your portfolio, create your website, network, visit comic fairs, inform yourself about artists contracts...And draw!!!

One last advice, inform yourself about prospect clients before starting working for them. There´s great people out there, and scavengers as well. Never start a work wihout signing a contract. Never sign a contract you don´t fully understand. And draw till it hurts.

Best of luck, if you believe you can do it, you will do it.

BTW you can find job offers at: deviant art, digitalwebbing, conceptart.org. It´s plenty of bs, you can find serious offers but you have to sort them out.

That's why I'm posting here. I am looking for something a little more reliable than hopes and dreams, not that there's anything wrong with those, as I've got some of those myself.
