  • Comissioned Work Thread

As the convention season is slowing I realize that lots of people get comissions from artists and I love seeing them but there isnt anywhere to put them up to share on this site. I understand that the poster didnt create it so obviously it doesnt belong in the Labratories Forum but dag-nabbit I paid some good money for some pics and I'd like to show them off and see fun art that you my fellow PJers comissioned from other artists.

I'd like to start a thread for art that is comissioned by you. This can include con sketches, illos, prints, collab. comissions, etc as long as it was made by another artist. This is not a place for cool pics you found on the internet of comissions that someone else got. This is for what YOU got.

Obviously this merits that you properly credit the artist with at least thier name but if you have a link to thier site or Deviant page put that up too.

I wanna see what you guys have gotten!

So I'll start this off with an awesome collab. comission that I just got.

I did the pencils and inks (here's the original- http://toddoss.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d30995p ) but wanted a pro colorist on this so I comissioned Mark Roberts http://markhroberts.deviantart.com/ to color this for me so I can sell prints at conventions.

It blew my mind how good of a job he did. It makes me feel like I'm a good artist or something when he makes it look a 1000x's better with his colors. He was super fast and very reasonably priced.

Cool idea for a thread. It's been over a year since I bought any art, so I've nothing to post, but I'm curious to see what you all are collecting.

Found her! Her name is Yang Fan http://jiuge.deviantart.com/ I set up next to her at C2E2. Really nice and sweet we did an art trade. I gave her an original Breath of Fire (old SNES game) fan pic I did and she gave me these prints

Jason Todd- with a manga flare

          Powergirl- stacked in the back

I've got these hanging in my studio now.

Would it be uncouthe to ask how much each commission set you guys back? I've always clamoured for original artwork, yet have always been of the mindset that its all a bit expensive (relative to my budget, not the work thats been put in!). My budget would be around £150-£200, forgive my naivety, but what could I hope to obtain within that bracket?

While not EXACTLY a commission I bought an inked copy of this piece by our own Jeremy and Kelly Dale when I was at the FanExpo in Toronto. I would scan the original, but it is currently getting framed.

I have always loved Jeremy's Spiderman so this is a prize for me. I have few others I need to put up with some fr, Jeremy and some from Loston will try to scan them soon.

First off let me say that I notice you put that in pounds and while I could convert it I think I'll let you do that. I'm lazy (what did you expect I'm American)

Well in my experience most commissions (single character, pencils) will run you $20-$50 for an unpublished artists that has decent art. You're lookin at $50-$100 for published professional (non-super star level) than for your Jim Lee's and other crazy super stars $300-$600 for commissions. These of course change based on the size of the commission and what mediums (pencils, inks, markers)

You also have your original art sequentials from books that vary significantly from page to page and artist to artist. With that said for many artists of note expect to pay between $200-$600. This will change based on what characters are on the page or if its action or dialouge. A page with a crazy action shot with wolverine could go for upwards of $1000 based on the artist. Or if say it colossus and Kitty talking in the mansion kitchen it could go for $150 it all depends.

So for what you're willing to spend you could get a pretty stellar catch on one original art at a convention or a few good ones depending on how you swing it.

Thanks for the in-depth answer, Toddoss. I was having a scoot about on Ebay after I posted my original comment, there are some quite attainable sequentials that I'd quite like, but now I'm after something a bit more personal. Your information has now set me off to get one! Hopefully I may be able to post something here in the coming months, I just gotta work on the wife to release the funds (a whole different ball-game lol).

To be honest I have a paypal card that I use to get paid for all my art stuff and I always sneak "expenses" for things like comissions or comics. My wife and I have a unsaid agreement that as long as it comes out of my art funds she doesnt need to know that it even happened.
