True, but there are entire story arcs that hinge on the assumption that zombies can't climb fences, can't run and are basically brain-dead.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm still enjoying it greatly.

    • I think we're still going to find that most of them are incapable of that sort of stuff. Only one zombie climbed the fence, only one or two used rocks. Remember the scene with the ladder? Most of them just sort of gathered around the base of it and only one of them was able to try and climb it. I don't know that we'll get an explanation, but it seems like they're being pretty careful to avoid making the zombies too capable.

      • It might also be based on how recently they became a zombie. It wouldn't be far-fetched to think that recently-zombified zombies still regain some of their motor-skills (and brain function?) and could do more simple stuff such as climbing or using a rock while "older" zombies could barely do more than shamble, bite and claw at things as their body's decaying. You don't see many old people jumping fences and climbing tall ladders after all. I think this might be the case since in Episode 1, it seemed like Morgan's wife (who didn't look that decayed) still had some semblance of her humanity by remembering her house and being able to turn the doorknob.

And it could still work in the context of the eventual prison scene people are talking about since I would think that there'd be plenty of old decaying zombies and not a lot of newly-minted zombies roaming outside the fences.

It's different from the comics but I don't mind this change too much (unless the zombies start running around like in 28 Days Later). I don't like any of the new characters shown so far though. Glenn and Dale were spot on I thought. Don't really like the change between the comic and TV version of Lori and Shane though cause it makes her look really, really bad and unlikeable. There's already a big thing about Lori in various forums where people are calling her a huge slut and already hoping her character dies. And while what she did was bad in the comic (but forgivable considering the circumstances), there doesn't seem to be any redeeming value to the TV-version of her character so far.

Yeah, I got nervous with the new character reveals, glad to find that Michone was not one of them. It would have been too early, too forced. Not that it wasn't forced already.

I think they're approaching this like Lost - where there are tertiary characters that don't get much, if any, screen time until their 15 seconds of face time comes calling. In otherwords, they'll be the Star Trek equivalent of Red Shirts for the zombie slaughters.

So far, it is slower paced than I expected, but I'm willing to wait out the season to see how it goes.

              • The other way to work fence-climbing against the prison arc is that the fences at the prison are topped with razor-wire and barbed-wire, and are multi-layered. So even if a couple of ambitious zombies can get up the fence, they'd have some trouble getting caught at the top. And if they can climb one, they still have to climb another. That's why the group kept up things like sentry duty and fence patrols (though I think they were worried more about breaks in the fence than climbers).

I don't much care for fence-climbin' zombies, but I understand you gotta keep the tension ratcheted, and an easy way to do that is to create a sense of (relative) safety, and then strip it away unexpectedly.

I expect to see Michonne early next season, not in this one. I expect this one to end with Rick, Carl and Shane in the woods.

                • Having the misfortune of not yet reading the comic, I get to approach this show with an open mind. I know, I know, I still haven't read the comic - now, though I'll get to read the comics after seeing the tv show and saying, wait - why didn't they do that?

But, with my unenlightened by the comic book frame of reference, I can say that I really love the show! As for characters showing up at odd times and all that, you can say the same about pretty much any comic that becomes a movie. Mary Jane in the first Spiderman? Talk about leaving the comic canon aside...

Now, I'm really looking forward to this big prison mess that I'm sure is going to happen! Although I still feel sorry for the horse...

                      • So I'm guessing the CDC building is going to take the place of the prison? It was a great moment at the end there where the door opened just as they were leaving.

I hope not. I do like how they incorporate new things into the show as opposed to doing a panel by panel remake of the comic, primarily because it keeps me from knowing everything that's going to happen. But I do want the basic outline to stay the same and the Prison, in my opinion, is the defining period for the comic. It strengthened some fans love for the book and caused some to drop it. Some thought it was the time where characters were best fleshed out and others refer to it as a "slow" period. I personally enjoyed the Prison Arc and think it needs to be included. Here's hoping.

I like the guy who plays Shane. Curious about the finally.

                          • I think the Prison arc would be a season unto itself, starting with the prison and ending with them leaving. Especially since that overlaps the Governor plot and a few others, and results in major cast shakeups.

Holding a similar storyline in a CDC building in the middle of a city isn't the same, though I guess you could carry some of the same plot-lines.

                            • i don't think they're going to replace the prison with the cdc building...

i was reading about this frank darabont interview a week ago or so, about the walking dead, and from what i remember he essentially said that:
-the governer isnt being cut out of the series
-the shane character is staying longer than he did in the comic (robert kirkman admitted he rushed his death cuz' sales for the first few issues weren't as stable as they are now, so he wanted to finish up as many plotlines as he could in case the series got cancelled)
-michonne and tyreese are gonna be in the show
-he's getting robert kirkman's advice on how to end the show, so it doesnt end up being Lost-like

and the new episode was pretty cool...
