  • Weekly Sketch Group 559 - THE GOON

Hello People, sorry I'm late ... again! Thank you all very much for last week sketches!

Have you ever heard about THE GOON? It's a great Comic created by Eric Powell back in 1999, its basically an horror / supernatural story with zombies, monsters, aliens, mad scientists, you name it, its awesome. If you want to know more about it I really recommend it. If you already know him, then get your pencils/tablets/display tablets ready and...

Let's draw "THE GOON"! (any character)

The topics keep coming! Love me some goon.

While I find some time to put something together, here's one from Pummel in 2016.

I always liked Eric Powell's shading. I've been trying to improve mine lately, so here goes!
I haven't really read The Goon, but I do enjoy Hilbilly, so I'll have to check it out.

It's beautiful stuff, especially given how gonzo the book is – he could have gone really cartoony and flat, and it would sell it, but he elevates it with the shading and colouring. Looks like he's going straight in over his heavy pencils, I guess with coloured inks or acrylics, and then builds up until he's happy – the big holding line seems to be ink, but everything interior remains largely defined by pencil shading.

Yeah, I had a hard time telling what was pencil shading and what was ink wash. Parts of it has that pencil texture but he does a great job of blending everything together. It almost looks like his figures are carved out of clay.
