Throwback Anthology (WC 42) Artist Contest

Each artist that wins will be published in the anthology.

Now that the stories for Writing Contest 42 - Throwback: Monsters have been decided we'll be moving on to the artist portion of the contest.

The way this contest will work is, each writer has chosen a page from their script for artists to draw. That way when the winner is chosen there will already be one page of the four page script completed. We'll only need a penciled page in these contests but if you're a full package artist and want to stay that way if you win the spot please let me know. Once the winner of the round is decided then we'll have a writer/artist team for the anthology.

One of the writers already has an artist for his script and another may have an artist too. So we'll have at least 3 if not 4 of these contests.

Each contest will run for a month and we'll only do one story at a time to keep everything as orderly as possible. After the month is up there will be a 2-3 week voting period in which time we'll start up the next round with a new page from another winning script. That way we can keep this contest moving along.

If I have missed anything or if you have any questions feel free to ask away.

The first story we'll be doing is "Why the Forest Lay Bare" by Tecknic. He has chosen Page 2 of his script for this competition which is pasted below.

Good luck to everyone and I'm looking forward to seeing the results. Please post your entries in this thread.

Page 1 (Three Panels)

Panel 1
Shot of a forest, with leaves colored for autumn, some still falling and other laying in mounds here and there. A dirt path runs through it, and upon that path walks a young woman in a black lightweight jacket and a blue skirt. This shot is taken from behind the woman, so her face is hidden, but her long brown hair hangs freely

Panel 2
This panel is a light brown color, and it is effectively a caption box. There will be one of these on each page, generally in it’s center.
There once was a forest, not far but not near,
A forest that many men had grown to fear.
That wood, it was home to the strangest of beasts,
Who would take passing folk and make them his feasts.

Panel 3
From an angled, downward view, the woman’s foot, in an old white and red high-top sneaker, steps by a small pile of leaves. This particular pile is notable due to the black almond-shaped eyes and crooked black grin that have formed upon it.

Page 2 (Three Panels)

Panel 1
A front shot of the woman, who is pretty but not beautiful. She has her hair parted down the middle, and a pair of thick-rimmed glasses on her face. Behind her some distance, the pile of leaves had sprouted a pair of long, clawed arms and is using them to pull itself up.

Panel 2
Another of the brown, caption box panels.
Such was one eve, near the end of one fall,
When a woman passed through there, one Mika St. Paul.
Oh what folly, for surely the beast would appear,
And devour her ‘til the sun showed it’s veneer.

Panel 3
The beast stands fully, and begins to stalk forward. It’s body is just a face with those almond-shaped black eyes and that crooked mouth, while it’s arms and legs are long and end in clawed fingers and toes. The entirety of the creature is made from leaves.

Page 3 (Three Panels)

Panel 1
The woman, Mika, has produced a silver flask from her pocket and is leaning back, taking a rather large swig from it. On the other side of the panel, the beast can clearly be seen growing quite close.

Panel 2
Yet another of the brown caption boxes.
But Mika was a strange one, a flask held in hand,
For she found the flavor of whisky quite grand,
She then turned back to greet the beast’s terrible hiss,
And returned, with great zeal, one fiery kiss.

Panel 3
Mika turns back toward the monster, which is incredibly near, her cheeks visibly puffed up. She holds a small, lit, disposable lighter up before her lips.

Page 4 (Three Panels)

Panel 1
The leaf beast rears back, clearly set ablaze. Mika is off to one side spewing a stream of whisky from her mouth, through the lighter, creating the torrent of flame that has set the beast alight.

Panel 2
The last of the brown caption boxes.
The beast was not seen ever more after that,
Not by man or woman or by dog in a hat,
In fact, that is the reason that the forest lay bare,
Though there is still debate who the monster was there.

Panel 3
Mika walks away, hands in her jacket pockets and a smile on her face, while the beast and the forest around it burns behind her.

Entry Deadline:
Friday, January 16th

Technically no. If the person who posted the challenge was also taking part in the drawing aspect of it, then yes.

It should be interesting to see what kind of response/turn-out this series of contests gets.
I'm quite interested to see how different artists handle Tecknic's script.

I'm with you Nellie, lets keep our fingers crossed for a great turnout like the writer side of the contest.

There are a ton of talented artists on Penciljack, and I know that we'll get to see some great entries.

I'm pretty stupid. I don't get the 2nd panel. Again I'm pretty stupid.

Well, it's unusual for a script in that it is written in verse, Manji, beautifully written albeit, but it may be somewhat confusing for an artist so I sympathize.
Alot would seem to be up to the artist as to how he/she wants to handle this panel. It would be better to have Tecknic himself explain, but when I read the panel I see a woman walking through a forest with leaves falling all around her and she is unaware of the crouched beast emerging from the foliage behind her.

Cool. Could this be a painted panel?

Manji you're free to do whatever take you want on this piece as long as it will fit in the normal comic book size formatting in the end Here is the full script for the story so you can get an overall feel for the story as a whole.
