Neither blows me away. If I had to go with design, the AMP. The Martrix unit is just ugly and your eye goes all over the place.

In terms of lethality, the APU no doubt. They gave the AMP detached weapons, like the rifle and knife, because it was COOOOL, not because it was actually feasible. Or something like that.

The AMP was given detached weapons because it was also used as a cargo loader with its manipulators. The APU was pretty much single purpose.

I'd have to go with the AMP design over the APU, because the APU was just a big messy pile of techno BS by comparison. A lot of the tech in The Matrix was purposely made to look like junk, but I thought they got a little carried away. The APU should've at least had some actual protection for the pilot. The AMP looks like a walking Apache attack chopper, and actually looks like something that could exist.

The D9 mech wins by actually having both integrated weapons and the ability to manipulate objects without actually holding them (the bullet catcher).

I would love to see a movie like that tho. Where the world has already been taking over by some form of AI and Aliens touchdown and theres some kind of confrontation. There would be some interesting dialogue.
there was a short story written by neil gaiman for the matrix website called goliath where the machines deal with an alien threat. he wrote it before the first movie came out, so it's probably not cannon. but i first read it in a collection of his short stories and i thought it was a very matrix-y feel to it, but not exactly what you would expect... then i found out he actually wrote it for the wachowskis. here's the link: http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/cmp/neil_g.html

    Thanks, jacon.

Good read. Not what I was expecting, but pretty interesting.
