Joe really never had to work himself up through the comic book industry ,and Marvel was pretty much beating down his door while he was in High school soooo I consider him one of the few that was always a star.
Only thing he really wrestled with is his anime influence. From an interview I read he had to tone it down alot while he was working on X men ,and as the numbers shot through the roof he would take more chances and slowly delved more into more anime type action/faces.
