Thread: Looking up

    Looking up

I have checked the reference links and googled it but I can't find anything. I'm working on a piece where the view is slightly angled up at the characters and for some reason I just can't get their jaw line and face right from that angle. The angle is such that they are looking up but not so much so that you can't see their faces.

Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!!!

That's a difficult angle. I generally work it out first by clearly setting up the basic shape and the cross-guide for the features, making sure that I'm following the curve of the face around (note that it gets more extreme the more they're looking up), and then putting the details in, but not over-delineating the jawline. In fact, sometimes from that angle I don't draw the jawline at all, and instead use a little light hatching to help separate the planes.

And dammit... I can't find a good example in my gallery. If nothing else, show us what you've got so far and maybe we can walk through it.

    Useful! Nicely done!

Do you see what I mean about not delineating the jawline when it's an an oblique angle to the camera? You can shade to help define the planes, but putting in a hard line along the jaw starts to look pretty odd, especially if you're working on a soft face, like a fat face or a feminine face.
