    Pencilling Doodles and studies

    This is my first post.

I am an advertising storyboard artist and I am in a tough place in my career. I've been doing this several years after deciding not to go into comic books as a career. But I am pretty creative and have a hunger to follow it out. But I don't know how.

I work at home in isolation (I suffer enormously from isolation. I do like solitude but not this much. Moving isn't an option for personal reasons. ) in a small midwestern city where there apparently are no other artists like me around. I'm self taught and have sort of learned by trial and error over the years. I hope to watch you guys and talk about things when I'm not working and maybe something will click.

I find that I have no real direction in mind insofar as where to go. I have made an abortive attempt to get into animation years ago and I have otherwise been laboring to crack the storyboard market in a bigger way than I have. I haven't found the thing that defines me as an artist. And that's what I want...some kind of juice.

Here are some sketches I did watching TV yesterday and a figure sequence I did on spec for an ad job I didn't get a couple years back.

I'm a journeyman I think. I hope to hear from anybody about things I might do, and suggestions. I can learn from anybody.

    Welcome to PJ!

I'd say you've got some great sketches here. I can't offer you much advise career wise, but there are plenty of people on here that can help you. Loston (aka Bruce Lee), Inkthinker, Paul Maybury, Kaligula and many others are all working in one capacity or the other and can possibly offer some great advice for that.

Art wise, I'd say you're on the right path. The one of the woman have great movement and energy. And the head sketches are excellent. Just keep plugging along and hopefully, something will drop your way soon!

Thanks, Brian. I'm looking forward to talking to everybody. It's nice to break the bubble and talk to people once in a while. Am I starting to sound pathetic? Yeesh.

Glad to have you on PJ! I can tell already that you have great skills with figurework.

As someone who started out as a role playing game illustrator, then turned to comics, then to comics licensing work and now, comics yet again, I can appreciate where you're coming from career-wise. Just know that every now and then we have to reinvent ourselves and try new directions. The first start is figuring out the direction you'd like to go in, then developing a nice portfolio of work to show. Give things a serious thinking over and then get to work! Hard work will payoff. I wish you best of luck and great success.

    Welcome aboard!

Thanks Wallace. Yeah that's the hard part: figuring out what to do. But I am beginning to understand that already just having some people to talk to that have done similar things is really stimulating the ideas to start to come. I guess it's a matter of starting just to take things seriously and the energy begins to flow...I'll post more sketches here as I do them. It is nice to have an audience.

Great stuff, Sid. I look forward to seeing you post more. Your linework on the figure is pretty fluid.

Really nice line work and fluid movement. Is that first more finished sketch Joe Walsh?

Joe Walsh? Could be a flashback on my part, I was a fan in the eighties.

No, I did that one out of my head. The heads I did just doodling while I watched TV. The other heads on the page are more referenced from photos. But no one in particular.

Thanks for the compliments. More to come soon.
