    Weapons Of Choice!

I'm always asking people what tools they use so I thought I'd Start a thread where people could compare/contrast gear. I'm sure theres other threads like this but this ones mine! jk hehe. anyways....

Currently using Eon comic boards cause they are insanely cheap but they tend to tear easy. My trusty Staedler lead holder is the only pencil I use and it always has either 4h or 5h cause I almost never get things right the first try. I rarely use brushes for inking. Rapidographs for tech stuff and a Hunt crow no. 102 or microns for just about everything else. Thats all I can think of ATM. Please post you opinions/tools! I always love to read about other peoples processes. thanks!

I got pretty technical at one point, even drew on PCs for the last three years, but I've gone full circle now.

    - HB Pencil

    - Any 6x8/8x11/11x7 White paper which is at least 80gsm thick, tho I tend to use about 140gsm regularly.

    - Kneaded Eraser

    - Pencil Sharpner

    - Dual Sharpie with one fat end and one thin end

    - Flat drawing board

    - Straight edge (sometimes!)

I'm sure I won't produce anything work-for-hire professional, but as something to get me drawing regularly and actually drawing comics again. It worked.

    - .7 mechanical pencil (2H and HB) for laying down rough pencils, an HB lead holder or HB Staedtler pencil (anything that sharpens really) for tightening.

    - Strathmore 500 series plate bristol for inking. I usually use 400 series Strathmore or Eon boards for pencil work.

    - Raphael Kolinsky 8408 #2, and Raphael Kolinsky 8404 #3 for brush work. Occasionally I use a Hunt crowquill for finer details on faces. Faber Castell artist pens for inking straight lines.

    - Speedball Super Black India Ink.

    - A kneaded eraser and an Art Gum eraser

    - A bevelled ruler

    - A light box.

    That's about it.

Everything for me has always been pencil and paper but I need to get a tablet for sure. Any suggestions on a model for a noob? if I get a cheap one will I probably want to replace it right away?

The new WACOM Bamboo is a pretty good starter model, and about as cheap as they get at $99. Once you get accustomed to using a tablet, then spend a couple hundred and upgrade to a larger model.

As Inkthininker said, the bamboo is a pretty cool tablet to start on, I have a Graphire4 wich I bought a month before the bamboo get in the market.
There will be a long time before you get a new tablet. I mean I would love to have a cintiq or an intuos, but there are a lot of things I can do with my graphire, and I still don't get tired of it. And since the bamboo is like the graphire4 evolution I think that is a great tablet to start on.

Some other stuff I use appart of my wacom:

    -Staedtler .5 mechanical pencil.
-Derwent 4H or 5h pencil for a quick lay out.
    -soft eraser.
-I've been under some paper problems, so I can't tell of a paper right now.

I'm not a big inker, but when I need to ink some stuff I use:
    - Raphael 0/0 and Winsor & Newton 3 brushes.
-And some corwquill pen (but I can't recall the brand right now).
-Pelican drawing ink, (wich I don't like too much but here in mexico is hard to find a different inks).

Does anyone have used higgins ink? I've read that some comic artists use that ink, but I couldnt yet find an art store that sell it here in mexico. Maybe I will buy some on ebay or something.

I use Higgins although I don't have a lot to compare it to. I like the way it flows, and it gives a nice rich black. I had one old bottle of it that seemed to be watery when I went back to use it several months after first opening it. I have no idea what would have caused that though...
