    Mike Allred or Steve Rude

Mike Allred or Steve Rude both seem to have similar but different but similar styles.

both have their own creator owned comic.

Which you seem to follow more.

Steve Rude's good but I'm a massive fan of Mike Allred. I'll buy pretty much anything with his name on it. I never bought that Mormon comic he did, but... well, I probably will eventually.

I'm going with Steve Rude. He's a master storyteller, painter, and carries on the legacy of guys like Loomis, Kirby, Toth, Wildey, and Manning. Rude's work is always top-notch--he's an artist's artist, a family man, and he's got guts enough to stand up for what he the things he believes in. He walks the path he has chosen to walk. It might not get him the sort of fanfare of someone like a Jim Lee, but "success" isn't just a measure of sales figures to some. Sometimes to be a success, you have to make your own way and clear your own pathway. Rude's determined to get to where he wants to go. I take a lot of inspiration from a guy like him. Rude is going against the grain, and that's a very difficult thing to do. It takes guts and will, and a work ethic that's brutal.

My hat is off to him.

I like what I've seen of Rude, but haven't gotten into him yet. OTOH, I'm in the same boat as ScottEwen, buying virtually everything Allred I come across. Doc's addictive.

Mike Aldred might draw similar in execution, but Steve has far better creativity and concepts. Plus I've seen Steve do style other than the one he likes. Better range, better artist in general.

FYI in Madman Atomic Comics #3, Allred homages over a hundred different artists.

Best. Issue. Ever. I am not kidding. But, like all of Mike Allred’s work it doesn’t fit in a neat little box. This issue doesn’t even fit in the current Madman box. It is simply a work of comic art joy. I suppose there is some story being pushed forward here and I’m pretty sure it’s about Frank Einstein’s morphing identity, but in no way will I think back on the experience of reading this issue and remember that. What I will remember is the ecstasy I was in while looking over every single panel. You see, Allred’s done an homage with this issue. A tribute to all the artists that inspire him. Every single panel is rendered in the style of that particular artist. There is a key on the inside front cover, but the joy I had was in trying to recognize each panel without looking back. Does that make me odd? Maybe, but I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.

Everyone is here, from all corners of the graphic universe, and maybe one of the reasons I love this issue so much is because everyone I would have wanted to see was included, (with the exception of Gil Kane, but maybe I just missed it). Names as varied and Chris Ware, Frank Cho, George Tuska(!),Peter Bagge and Joe Quesada. A Kirby splash and a Tim Sale tribute to Steranko on the back cover makes the entire conglomeration a must have for anyone who loves the visual art of comics.

You see, that’s why I’m here. I’m an art guy from the very beginning. I can’t get past bad visuals the way I can slip by some sloppy plotting and clunky dialogue. In the beginning, I collected comics based on who drew them, not on who was in them. That’s how I ended up with those Rawhide Kid comics that now I can’t give away. They were Kirby. And I loved Kirby. Had to have them. Now, now it’s Allred. What can I say, I’m just funny that way.
Get this book. You will linger over it, laugh at it and love it.
