Thread: Ask Loston (Dr. Stupid Jr)...

Wow thank you!! I actually have that book!.. I'm going to go through that first then..For the Jack Hamm, Loomis, Bridgman, is it best to read like an actual book and then draw page from page? Do you think Action figures, especially the poseable ones are good tools? I skimmed through Loomis and he recommends a mannequin.

HOW TO DRAW THE MARVEL WAY should help you figure out how to do the sort of underdrawing you need to create dynamic figures and dynamic foreshortening. You won't find a book better than that one on those subjects.

That said...books can be a great help, but nothing beats drawing from life. If you get a chance, take some life drawing classes to learn how to draw the human figure. Having life, nude models to work from is more beneficial than reading a hundred books.

Thank you so much Loston, I'm hoping to attend this life drawing session held in Houston called Dr.Sketch (only 2nd sunday of each month) if I don't need to go to Space City Con( a new convention in Houston, I'm going the Saturday) twice. I also incorporated http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php/ this website using the 30minute/1hour intervals.
I read your advice while doing the search on a certain topic in tips/tech forum, I will apply that to foreshortening too(drawing the part closest to the view first)

Good. I'm glad you read that. It will prove very helpful, I'm sure. You have to give yourself room to draw, and you can't do that if your'e trying to make the background objects meet the foreground objects in the middle. Working from front to back is the best method. It keeps things simple.

Keep working on your anatomy as much as you can. Proportions and shapes are basic fundamentals of drawing, and you need to master them. I don't recommend the Burne Hogarth books, by the way, because Hogarth drew anatomy that was very stylized. If you want to draw anatomy that is more realistic and real-world, you need to look at Jack Hamm's DRAWING THE HEAD & FIGURE, and Andrew Loomis' FIGURE DRAWING FOR ALL IT'S WORTH. Those books are more on the mark in regards to human anatomy. Another book I'll recommend to is THE HUMAN FIGURE AN ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS, by David K. Rubins. It is a lesser known book, but it is inexpensive and very informative:

THE HUMAN FIGURE, AN ANATOMY FOR ARTIST:

I think you mentioned that you had the Loomis book, but I posted it for anyone out there who might be lurking.

I will definitely take all that advice you've given me tonight and apply them. I stopped doing Hogarth studies recently, I think I will just use that for lighting, I do like the lighting effects he incorporates.
Thank you for all your time Loston.

Make no mistake about it, Burne Hogarth was an amazingly talented artist, but if you're just starting out drawing, you're probably better off learning real muscles and anatomy from artists that drew that sort of thing. Hogarth concentrated more on the dynamics than he did on drawing actual realistic anatomy. His work was stylized, and is wonderful to look at, but it's best to start out looking at someone like Loomis, who worked in a more realistic approach. Drawing from life still trumps learning to draw from any artist though. That, you can take to the bank.

I think that's an excellent book. It's my second favorite book on the subject. The Gary Martin book, THE ART OF COMIC BOOK INKING is still my favorite, but any book that has inking tips by Klaus Janson is a winner!
