Thread: Jason Lee

    Jason Lee

Something I did as a tutorial for my H.S. class for portraiture.

Kinda sucks that I can't get the scanner to pick up the real fine details and shading. Your seeing maybe 2/3 of what's actually shaded in.

First, let me say that I really, really dig the detail in this (even though you say most of it didn't come through). The beard is phenomenal. My only crit is that I don't really know if I'd be able to tell that this is Jason Lee if I hadn't been told beforehand. I definitely catch the likeness in certain spots, but as a whole, I dunno. Did you reference this from a photo? It might help people critique this better if they could look at the original (if this was referenced, that is). But it's good, man, really good, and I'm a big Jason Lee fan so this is cool to see.

Maybe it's just the hat but it looks like if Jason Lee and Dom DeLuise had a baby. Nice work on the shading and details, it just needs to be tweaked a little more to really look like Jason Lee.

It's photo referenced from "entertainment" spread on "My Name is Earl".

I was teaching how to do portraits based on photos or in this case, ads.

I see I still need to bring the beard into the cheek area

The teeth are the only areas not shaded. All the bright spots actually have a blended gradient going on into the darker areas.

The beard is thick and sticks out from his face making it appear wider.

This has some great shading. If you copy both images into PS they match up almost exactly, especially the eyes, wrinkles and nose. You mouth is a bit higher but again it matches exactly if you move image down to overlap them. Regardless it has some great pencil work.

you've made the hair too consistently thick. theres a patch under his chin where he grows less hair, and thus has some skin show throw. but it's pure beard on yours.

ok my 4th retype now. It's a great portrait, theres just not much resemblance(which is entirely OK).

If you could 1) bring the cheekbones in, 2) make his beard hair point straight down as opposed to down and outward it'd also take some width off his face. 3) bring his hair up and replace it with more beard. 4) Make the cheeks smaller. Those are your 4 main problems - the facial features are great. It's the general shape of his head in some spots. His eyes are appearing to look downward in the drawing, but straight ahead in the picture. You have them drawn the way their pictured yes, but the trick with that is to draw the iris and the pupil correct. After typing this thing 4 times I'm kinda burnt out, so I'll add a little more about the eyes later.
