I never liked using it when I was in high school so I switched over to the white vinyl/click erasers.
I have to be honest here. I'm going to feel like a dumbass, but it's been bugging me for a year now. I've tried looking this up on the net, but I'm not getting anything, so I gotta ask.
What the hell good is art gum? It's like a beige block of something that crumbles into dust whenever it touches paper. I've tried to figure out just how to use it, but I got nothing. What's the secret to using the stuff, Abracadabra?
...and then the Squirrels appeared.

Use it to erase heavy dark lines. Like anything over a 2b. Its more abrasive than the vinyl's.
It sucks. I use a kneaded eraser.
I use a regular pencil eraser if it's good quality and won't rip up my paper. And I use a Mars Staedtler plastic eraser. A kneaded eraser is good too, especially for charcoal drawing.
Artgum erasers are one of those things you are told to buy for your first drawing class and you never use again because they are awful :P
