    Going rate??

Ive just been offered a freelance job from Sony Entertainment to do Concept Art for a new video game. Only problem is I dont know what the going rate is for a New Concept Artist. I've never had a job like this so I'd figured I'd ask ya'll what you think is a fair starting amount for concept art.

Are you in San Diego? I've got a few friends from the art school I was going to there that are working for Sony. It's a pretty good gig if you can get it. I don't know what their pay rate was though. I want to say 60-100K. But don't quote me on that. It depends on your experience and skills.

I assume this is just a freelance gig, not an ongoing employment within the company, so you won't draw a salary... just a payment (or series of payments) based on an invoice determined by the contract.

See, the thing is, depending on what you're illustrating you may not just be selling the images themselves, but also intellectual property... you're not just doing a drawing, you're also potentially designing the look of a character that may be involved in an ongoing franchise. And that's worth something above and beyond the price of just the artwork itself.

It really depends on the job, but (as much as I hate to send someone somewhere else) it's possible that the guys at ConceptArt.org can help as well... if only because they're as focused on videogame design as we are on comics.
