How does Frank Frazetta do it?

I know he uses oils but just curious if anyone knows anything about his painting technique.

I heard he uses 0 photo references. I think he's lying but isn't that amazing. To have all that visual knowledge just stored in your head?

well he doesnt really draw in a photo realisitic style. I dont know if he uses 0 photo reference, i know for some of his work he did life drawing, and im sure he used some reference for the movie posters in the least. He is a man of great skill though. if you want to learn about his works history he has a lot of books, but if you want to know about his techniques, well i have yet to see a book about it

At this point in his career, I don't believe he needs photoref. Certainly he did study a lot of life drawing, but most of his paintings display a more illustrative style than a photoreal one, which is consistent with his early career as a cartoonist and illustrator.

You want photoreal model-based painting, check out Vallejo and his wife, Julie Bell. They use extensive photoreferences, often of themselves (they are some muscular people), for many paintings.

That's a great documentary. He says he procrastinates until the last minute and does most of his paintings in an 8 hour period, afterwhich he is drained for days. This leads me to believe he is putting pieces of his soul in his paintings. So my suggestion is to study black magic.

    Hope this help3'LL

i went to his museum in Boca Grande, Fl and actually got a chance to talk to him about using references. He said that he has never used references and always worked from memory of what he thinks things look like. as for technique, he would not say. guess its just practice. if you ever go down to Boca Grande you gotta check his museum out. its awesome.

As for his oil paintings, they are renaissance techniques. He sketches his drawing on a streatched canvas then paints a thin dark color, usually brown. when it dries he slowly builds up the color in layers, letting each layer dry. The really worked up and light detailed parts are a ton of layers, while the dark stuff is usually just the first stages and are really thin.

That technique is called underpainting, btw. You can do some really rich and intersesting things with it.
His work looks like oil to me.
