Who here know how to paint like Alex Ross?

Man, he's gotta be just about the best in my opinion...Anyone know of any tips on how he does his art? I'd like to find a video on the internet of him in action.

Ross is just a classically trained artist who paints a unique genre (Superheros) using pastel, color pencil, and water colors to produce photorealistic paintings. He graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Most of the skills he uses can be learned by taking a painting class, or studying a book on painting techniques found at your local bookstore. The rest is up to you, practice makes perfect!

Ross uses extensive photo reference as well. Actual models in actual costumes. And I'm not cutting on that at all - I use a TON of photo reference - but I just wanted to throw that in to the mix.

About two years ago DC Comics had a video of Alex Ross painting a JLA piece on their site, which was pretty interesting to watch.

Mythology The DC Comics art of Alex Ross is a good book to take a look at. It features his influences, shows the photo reference he uses and how he transforms that into his finished image, plus a step by step process of how he created the cover featuring Superman. Its also a great book because you see him work through the process of creation and discuss his ideas, and why he changed things from their inital stages.

Thanks guys....sorry for posting in the wrong place...I always skip those posting guidelines in every message board I go to.

So in your opinion...do you think he starts out with the light colors first and then add darker tones of the same colors(read he uses goache)? Or you think it's visa versa.

If youv'e ever read Kingdom Come you'll see he throws about 50 characters into a panel at times. Wish I knew how he did that too.. Must take him weeks to finish something like that.. Don't count on any deadlines with him........you know what I'm saying?

On all the interviews i've read where he describes his painting method, he always lays down the blacks first which includes graytones, then he goes in with the color.
