Lord of the Rings: Evolution Sketch Cards

Hope all is well for the Hoildays ladies and gents. These were a group of cards (150 that I am doing) that Topps Entertainment has approved and said I could show off. There are also more art exclusively for view on www.mankindram.com. Which starting in '06 will be updated once a week.

These are pretty good. I like the style, but I have to say I'm a bit surprised that a company like Topps would use a style like this for their cards. I would imagine most trading card companies would want something more realistic or more painted-looking, like Magic: The Gathering cards, you know?

    Still, good stuff nonetheless.

I thought the same thing, but was convinced to actually do samples for Topps. I HAD to be talked into it as I thought the same thing. The sketch card community is a big industry now, from what I am told. Other people with similar styles were involved with Star Wars Revenge of the Sith and this Lord of the Rings set. www.otisframpton.com www.tomhodges.com www.grantgould.com and www.gotgutz.com are all doing cards for this set as well. So I guess that outside of the box we all think in, some companies try new things. Thanks for the kind words.

Not bad, Rich, but I'm not fond of the nose highlights you're drawing. On some of the women's noses, they sort of look like blisters to me. That's not what you want to convey, I'm sure. Best to just do that stuff as a halftone of in color only.

I also suggest not playing up too many angles on the women's faces. You have to tread delicately, or the more chiselled, angular looks can look a little mannish.

I can see you've made good headway drawing the gals, but there's room for some refinement still.

    Hope that was helpful.

If you get a chance to redo Bilbo, I'd give him less Doc Brown hair, more curly.

I'd love to see someone do a bunch of character sketches of the players from the Silmarillion.

Um these are original cards they can't be redone in anyway, BUT I did do another one and it had more traditional Hobbit hair. These were the first ones I did and I was finding my groove. Thanks Bill.

    Thanks Loston, for the crtique.
