I'm pretty new at coloring too. I like this a lot except for a few things I'll point out that look off in my opinion. The hair is shaded a little randomly. It looks like you just colored it to get it over with because its just scribbled around. I guess his hair could be messy. Another thing is that the optic blast looks more solid, rather than a lazer beam. Other than that it looks great!

looks good to me too the only thing id suggest is a shade of red to the face of cyclops where the colour of the laser beam would be reflecting on his face. that might improve it somewhat. but keep practicing you can only get better.

Ak, I'm mostly a novice myself (certainly no master) but I'm more than happy to give a crit.

My first question (and one I ask pretty frequently) is, where is your lightsource? The shading across his body is pretty smooth, but inconsistent. For example, the bottom edge of his pectoral is lit, but so are the bottom edges of his abdominal muscles. His right arm (our left) has lighting evenly on both sides implying a second lightsource behind him, but this light isn't effecting his head or either leg. The drop shadow under the bandolier-doo-dad is spread pretty far, implying that it's quite a distance from his body (a couple inches at least) and that a lightource is up and to the right. So, the bottom line of this part is consistency... Figure out where your lightsources are first, and figure out your shading and highlighting from there. It will add more depth and solidity to the figure.

There's a couple spots that could be cleaned up. There's some color bleed on the bandolier and the top edge of his utility belt, making them green. I agree with the above poster about the hair... Also, it looks like you just kind of ignored the straps on the legs.

My last crit is about the optic blast... From what I'm seeing, it really seems to be the focus of the picture to me, but it received the least attention. The gradient kind of sells that it's some type of energy beam, but to me it's just screaming for some creativity. You can pump up the intensity of the color, and I think it would really help to use it as a lightsource. Hit the face with some reflected red light, and the body to a lesser degree. Not only would this increase the intensity of the blast, but also connect it to the rest of the image more.

Anyway, I think it's cute, and definitely a nice start. One of the first pics I colored was by SoulRailer also...

Good luck, and I hope this helps!
