Post "There's a bomb in the restaurant!"

Florida Man Makes Accidental Bomb Threat
    By Alex Fraioli
    5/27/2004

Jacksonville resident Anthony S. Jones, 27, is being held responsible for the evacuation and perceived bomb threat against his place of employment after a phone call to a friend last sunday night. Jones, a cook at a North Jacksonville restaurant, was coaching a younger player in a game of Grand Theft Auto while on the phone with a friend at the restaurant when his advice was misinterpreted on the other end of the line.
Needless to say, Jones' exclamation of "There's a bomb in the building. There's a bomb in the building. Everyone needs to get out!" was not taken lightly by restaurant management. The restaurant was evacuated and all patrons were searched for explosives. None were found.

Unfortunately for Jones, the police are treating his accidental bomb threat as legitimate and are pursuing second-degree felony charges. If convicted, Jones could spend up to 15 years in prison. The trial is scheduled for Circuit Court on June 16. Odds of any sympathetic GTA diehards appearing on the jury are rated as slim to nil.

Now, I realize this fellow could be in trouble for wasting company time on the telephone while giving tips about GTA to someone else but damn! Does anyone else think the punishment is incredibly harsh for something so silly?

I can see it now. Headlines reading "Wannabe bomber caught in the act! Videogames to blame!" This reminds me of my little brother coming home from school one day, ranting about how a close friend of his was suspended with expellment pending because he mentioned the word "bomb"... Not maliciously, just something that came up in a conversation. Anyway, found this on www.1up.com. Thought I'd share.

Except that there's no mandatory sentencing, so it's in the judges discression. I'm sure he'll get off with a wrist slap, and some community service.

I knew this guy, and his little brother got suspended for joking about Columbine right after it happened. Somehow or another, the cops got a warrant to search their house, and they found a ton of explosive paraphenelia. Like Lemon Joy, a can of gasoline, PVC pipes in the garage, and empty jars in the recycling bin. What a freaking joke that was.

In any case, I hope this guy learns his lesson and gets a Gamecube.
