I remember seeing it somewhere, maybe I read it, that there is an actual mathematical formula that pop music follows that will put it in the top 40. I think a teacher told me... yeah... He knows a woman who the head of psychology at some university and she works for advertising firms as a consultant, or something like that. I bet you could do the same thing with a couple Linkin Park songs or three or four.

Wow, what a bunch of pretentious ... hmmm... Ok, Not all popular music is good and it's true that often good music is ignored by the mainstream, but that doesn't mean that all popular music is shit either. And I wouldn't go so far as to suggest you should like the same things I do, but at the very least, don't malign some very talented musicians and writers just because they are successful in a genre of music that you personally don't appreciate.

I'll even admit that no, Nickelback and Linkin Park certainly aren't challenging. Obviously, they want their message to reach as large a population as possible. I bet if you talked to Will Eisner, Neal Adams, Alex Ross or even Neil Gaiman, they'd tell you how important the numbers are, if only to share their stories with the most people possible. Of course it's important what the stories are about! In Nickelback's case, they've delved into battered women, drug abuse, and even a little bit of human psychology (taking the perspective of a partner in sub/dom relationship). Linkin park often sings about how it's ok to be different in a society that offers tremendous pressure to conform. That's a damn sight better than the blunts, 40's and bitches mentality offered up by most rap artists or the sex kitten persona adopted by most dance/pop "divas", isn't it?

I agree, Nickelback and Linkin Park focus on personal relationships frequently in their songs. To me that's understandable from both a marketing and personal interest/subject fodder perspective, given the population now boasting 6 billion on earth!

As to the two songs in question, they both probably fall into that category (personal relationships), but that's where the similarities end. While "How you remind me" tells the story of a broken relationship where the singer realizes belatedly that his partner helped him have the strength to be a better person, conversley "Someday" talks about The end of a relationship that the singer hopes to turn around with a promise to make it better... soon. Certainly different stories there, arent there? (Then again, maybe you think that since The Dark Knight Returns is a crime book and Sin City is a crime book, Sin City is derivative of DKR. Oooh that Miller burns me up!)

Obviously, Nickelback has a particular style. Just as Tony Moore and Cory Walker have a certain artistic style they follow,Chad Kroeger and his bandmates observe the world a certain way and express it wih a distinct flavour. Keep in mind, it is their flavour, with limited interference from outside hands. They write the music, and record it with minimal assistance (less than a dozen people including engineers, producers and record executives.)

Furthermore, I listened closely to the two recordings to compare and contrast. Here's what I found.

First of all while they start similarly, Someday has a different drum sound than How You Remind Me, and the drums don't start until much later. Overall, Someday is a "heavier" song compared to the light "airy" feeling of How You Remind Me. The rhythms of the two songs are completely different (Someday has a 6/8 feel on the verses) and the structures are not the same either. And while both songs share instrumentation to a degree, the arrangements are very different and Someday offers strings and How You Remind Me an organ! You don't have to be a musicologist to hear the distinct difference of the two. You do, however, have to decide not to make up your mind until you've listened to both songs with it opened.

    Any questions?

Said the Gramophone had these up a while ago. Pretty funny, especially the Nickelback one. Even if some editing was apparently necessary to get them to macth up as well as they do.

Awww... I like Linkin Park... and Nickelback isn't so bad. I think they're a little cheesy at times but they aren't 'bad'. I agree with pretty much everything thespian is sayin. I mean we copy things all the time, we do things the same everyday. Their songs sound alike because they have a style... and compared to most bands out there they're still relatively 'new'. Its not fair to put them along bands like Creed. Creeds just silly. Maybe not the whole band... but (cripes, now I can't remember his name) the lead singer is. I'm pretty sure he's got a Jesus complex.
