Well, I'm not sure what you mean by short term. It's been 6-7 months since I've went on Atkins.

But, like many people have alluded to: It's not just a diet you need to change, it's a lifestyle. Now lifestyle can mean major changes, but really it's small changes that need to be put into place for everything to work.

Drink lots of water. Limit on the carbohydrates that you eat. No or very little sugars. Don't eat too close to bed time. Excercise at least 20 minutes every other day.

I don't mean to sound like a braggart, but when I lost the 30 lbs. I was like WTF?? This is what people have been complaining about? How can anyone call that hard? I basically did nothing but eat different foods! For this, they invented Weight Wathers, Jenny Craig's diet program, diet bars, and numerous diet books? It didn't seem right.

Really, Atkins is the way to go. And if you implement small lifestyle changes, you can keep off the weight forever.
If it don't smell funny, eat it.

I was up to 240lbs from my 175 in high school a few years ago, but when I gave up booze I dropped to about 200 in four months. Then, about 6 months ago, I got sick of my gut so went on an all salad diet (salad twice a day, one of which could have one kind of meat and a little shredded cheese) and lifting with dumbells and 100 sit-ups (worked my way up from 25) and 50 push-ups (worked my way up from about 2) every night. I dropped 25 lbs in two weeks, dropped the diet and stuck with the exercise and I maintain around 180-185. I'm 6'3 by the way, so that's fairly thin.
The main thing is motivation to exercise, which I get by looking at pics of myself a from a few years ago.
It's not your fault, it's mine, because I forgot you are stupid.

It doesn't help that as a group, we tend to sit on our asses for a living.

That's not an excuse, but it's something to think about. If you're an artist, you're going to have to make an extra effort to exercise because it's in no way a part of your daily regimen.

My best friend works all day putting up and repairing cable lines, and his job basically entails his already skinny ass climbing up and down poles and trees all day with 20-30 pounds of equipment or more. As a result he's more intolerable than ever, since he went from being naturally skinny to actually being more fit than usual from all the daily exercise. He keeps calling me "fat boy" (I'm a fairly stable 210 at 6', about 25-30 lbs. over where I should be) when we play Halo or Soul Calibur 2, which drives me on to pop him in the head or kick him off the edge (come to think of it, my scores have been getting better lately), but it's easy for him to talk. He's 5' 3" and barely clears a buck when sopping wet, and has been since we were in high school.

I hate people with naturally high metabolisms... But there's a ray of light: he's 28 and rapidly going bald, whereas I'm 27 and my hair is as lush and full as ever.

Eat healthier. Also, don't eat if you're not hungry. If you have a big meal, chances are that you're eating more than you need to. Don't feel like you need to finish your food if you aren't hungry any more.

If you have the time, you should try walking places instead of driving/ taking public transportation. You'll also be saving money.

Although what do I know? I'm a little chunky myself. I used to walk every day, but now there's something wrong with my knee. It makes excercise a little difficult.

That's another thing... we get BIG servings in a lot of places in the US, and we feel like we should be eating the whole thing or else we're being wasteful (we are, but that's beside the point right this second), but in actuality many times we're just over-eating.
