    Fables, NYX, Walking Dead, Wanted

Damn good week for comics, I think. If you didn't buy these books, you're missing out. Here's a few of my thoughts...

Fables - Well, the Red-Riding-Hood-as-spy concept is even more obvious now than it was in the last issue, but is it maybe too obvious? Could there be another twist to things? I'm not sure; probably the complications in this arc will be provided in great number by King Cole and Prince Charming and there won't be any need to have Bigby be incorrect in his initial guess. This remains my favorite ongoing series, I think. And the cover this month is absolutely kickass.

NYX - Any doubts I had about Quesada being able to pull off believable dialogue and good pacing are gone. He's doing an excellent job, I think, and this title is moving up the list of my favorites. It still seems a bit like setup, though, and I'm not quite sure why. But then again, Marvel seems to be operating that way nowadays. Not that it's a bad thing, necessarily. And Middleton is still damn amazing.

Walking Dead - This is definitely Kirkman's best, most natural scripting to date. And the plotting seems dead-on. Really looking forward to seeing where things go from here - there's so much to explore. Tony's art is perfectly complimenting the writing here - all the characters are believable, individual, and wonderfully rendered. The endings could be a bit stronger, I think - there's an attempt of an ominous sentiment here, but I think it could have been a bit harder-hitting if the pacing was changed a bit, maybe.

Wanted - Definitely not "Watchmen for supervillains" - Millar was right to abandon that tagline. But very intriguing, and exectued with what looks like it'll be the most wonderfully sadistic Millar writing I've read yet and with the best art J.G. Jones has ever turned out.

Since Willingham laid out the spy thing so clearly this time, my guess is it's either a red herring, or a misinterpretation of the facts. He's just not that straightforward with stuff.

But Bigby's theories and my own are/were fairly similar. Can't wait for the next one.

And Walking Dead? Look at all those letters!

I haven't read the rest yet. I'm just getting to the stack.

Nahhh... I think she's playing up people's sympathies too hard. Red's crooked like a man walking a mile along a fence with sixpence and a cat.

    CrOoKeD.

'Course, now that I take that stance, there will of course be a twist to prove me wrong. I am Murphy's bitch.

Walking Dead is just hot, that book is doing it right. Need to option that bad-boy for an HBO miniseries or something. I'm real proud of our boy Tony, he's doing a damn good job on the art, and Robert keeps me just on this side of unsure whenever I think I know what's going on.

And that letters page... DAMN! I guess I better write on of my own, or I'm going to get left out of all the fun.

It seems to me that she must be what Bigby thinks...especially since it fits with what Benito said about the last issue. The "twist" - what will make it not-entirely-straightforward - is that Cole wants her to be what she says she is, and at the same time he'll be facing a challenge from Prince Charming. So even if Bigby and Snow are right, they could very well be powerless to do anything.

Just looked back at Fables #19. At the very least, Red's lying:
Red: In any case, they were all killed, Fables and Gobs alike, and I got away.
Snow: Making your way here all on your own?
    Red: Yes.

Yet as Benito pointed out, one of the Goblins survived. And that's another twist Bigby doesn't know about.

Wanted was great. It's no Watchmen, but I'm excited to see where it goes. Millar's pretty hit or miss with me, but when he hits, it's a direct hit. This one was pretty damn awesome.

And yeah, Doom, I think that may be the key to the difference between Bigby's theory and reality.

Other things I bought this week:

Cloudfall (see thread in FoT forum)
    Space Ace
    1602
    Gotham Central (this book....is awesome)
    Ultimate X-Men
    Super Hero Happy Hour TPB

Good week for comics. Not a single stinker in the pile. Not even Space Ace.

YES. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next issue.

Wanted was pretty cool. I don't get all the Watchmen comparisons either, but it looks like it'll be fun. JG Jones draws great action scenes.

I bought Walking Dead, but it fell in a puddle of melting ice on my way home. Which means I'll have to buy it again just so Tony's art doesn't get spoiled for me. Yes, I am pissed off.

I also got Demo and Ultimate X-Men. Anyone who's reading NYX might want to give Demo a try. . . It's the same premise (young people dealing with getting superpowers,) except they're all self-contained stories. Drawn by the wonderful Becky Cloonan, to boot.

Did anyone pick up the Lost at Sea OGN? I was going to buy it today, but I was a few dollars short. It's on hold for me until next week, along with Cloudfall.

So it DID come out. The retailer i went to said it didn't ship. Bastards all...

Not too mention the fact that Brian Wood was the original writer of NYX, in like 1999...But, Marvel booted him off the book and let it sit around all this time.

I've not been reading the NYX book, but I love DEMO!!!

(And not just for the above reason of it being by the original creator.)
