GUNN - in steel we trust (8 page submission)

GUNN is one of my favorite projects... something quite a bit different in terms of the artistic style and also the way the words play off of the imagery.

    Have a look:

    Title Page

    PAGE 1

    PAGE 2

    PAGE 3 and 4

    PAGE 5

    PAGE 6

    PINUP PAGE

    Any and all feedback welcome.

My jaw dropped from these pages over in DW and now they are dropping here. Just really some great work twisted!

Holy crap, I love the style. Can you tell me how you did that? (Explicit details for every single line/effect/nuance/etc. please).

My crits: the figures and action suck. Faces look weird, need reference. The action is almost abstract. Like when she falls into the cab, or when he shoots the creature. Some things took me awhile to discern, others remain stylistic mysteries.

    Landscape, objects, etc.... gorgeous.

Seriously, though, tell me how this was done. I'd like to experiment in this vein. I've always done really clean stuff but love how photocopies of my pencils look, darkened.

Summerhavok: Thanks! Philipp S Neundorf is the artist, I am the writer. Really glad you enjoyed these pages, and thanks for taking time to comment.

Raging Wiener: Cool, glad you dig the feel of these pages. Like I said above, Philipp S. Neundorf is the artist, so I can't help as far as describing his process. He is extremely creative and his work, while having simularities to some other artists, is very unique overall. The "abstract" nature of his art is intentional...he isn't going for accuracy in terms of anatomy. I've seen him do pieces with correct anatomy, so this isn't a "cop out", but more of a driven style choice.

I can understand about some of the action, he gets better with sequential type work all the time. GUNN is meant to be a very strong fusion of words and art...another conscious decision on our part. I'd rather have Philipp doing larger panels that take up more of the page than see him breaking each page into a lot of small panels. His art impacts more when it is allowed to fill up the page. In GUNN, the action will be somewhat reliant on the text/captions. Like page 2...her leap into the cab of the truck...only works when you read the text. Otherwise you really wouldn't be 100% clear on what has happened.

I'll see if I can't get Philipp over here to talk about his methods a bit.

I can't shake the feeling that you and I have discussed this before, twistedspine. Users must post their own artwork in the PJ Studio forums. Since this artwork is admittedly not yours, this topic is being moved to News, Updates & Announcements. Please post topics in the appropriate forums in the future.

Yeah, if you could get him to drop a few tips, that'd be great.

The writing is yours? Look up evolution in the dictionary, that irked me quite a bit. Other than that, I thought it had kind of a smokey, transient feel to it. Nice.

You know what, just to make sure I wasn't being a dick I looked up evolution myself and discovered it's now okay to use evolution as a transformation instead of strictly as an adaptation to increase chances of reproduction. My mistake; carry on.

First, Thanks for the comments Raging, appreciate it.

Terry: This is MY project, and the storytelling aspects of it are as much MINE as the artist's. And, the artist doesn't have the time or desire to post on these boards, but I WANT THE HONEST feedback that the members here offer. That's why I keep coming here, despite the fact that it always seems to be a pissing match with the moderator.

This is NOT news. It is not an announcement, it is a series of storytelling/sequential pages that I am directly involved with in terms of their creation. I thought this section was for feedback on STORYTELLING aspects of sequential pages??? Why is that ONLY about the artwork itself, when the writer is 1) involved in the writing that becomes the art for each page and 2) progresses the art and creates a foundation for the art with WORDS.

I just don't get the attitude here when I'm showing pages myself and my artist have worked incredibly hard on, and we just want some feedback on them so we might make improvements before submitting them.

It ends up being a "pissing match" with moderators because YOU consistently post in the wrong forums. The Studio Forums are for art posting, as is patently clear by the description. Here, I'll help you out by copying and pasting the description that's on the main forum page, directly under the word "Studio", under which the Storytelling & Sequential Art forum falls:

Post artwork for review and critiques by other members
Now, having said that, did you DRAW the pages? Were YOU responsible for creating the artwork? By your own admission, NO you were not. Therefore, it is not appropriate for YOU to post someone else's artwork in the Studio forums. This has been explained to you several times.

The Studio forum is ONLY about the artwork itself because - Newsflash - this site was created as and primarily still is a COMIC ART site. We make allowances for writers - if you want to post a script, you may feel free to do so in the Writer's Desk forum.

It's not my responsibility to ensure your artist has the time to post the pages himself. It's yours. It's also your responsibility to ensure you're posting in the correct forums. I've been very patient with you in this regard, but I'm not going to be patient forever. If you keep insisting on posting in the wrong forums, the only recourse I'll have is to revoke your posting priveleges, and I really don't want to do that. It's really no trouble to post in the correct forum - hundreds of other people manage to do so every day.

FYI - I've taken some time to go ahead and add posting guidelines to the tops of all the studio forums. It should be much easier now to judge where you should post.

    Thanks for your overwhelming patience.

    Please delete this topic.

I could have easily asked the artist to post the pages himself, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

It is still about OUR project and the art/sequential work, whether he posts it or I do. So what if I post it on his behalf.

This place has always been overly uptight. Have fun!
