    New storyline in "Fables"....

I picked up the latest issue of Fables and it's previous issue, the start of the new storyline (which apparently is heavily connected to the LAST storyline, which means it is NOT neccessarily all that great a jumping-on point after all) and I gotta say... I still dig it, but the dialogue is weak...

I mean, c'mon, who actually says, during a car crash hurtling down a mountainside, "We've had it now!"

    Ick...

And without spoiling too much, what is the deal with Goldilocks? I mean, apparently I'm supposed to know, but until the second graphic novel is out I'm going to be trying to catch up... she's wanted, but for what? And why is she such a psycho bitch?

I like the series, I dig the premise, and the art is competent, if not inspiring (I've never been a raving fan of Buckingham, but he's good at his job).

But the dialogue has got to get better...

The part that got me was, "I'm answering your question, but in my own way." I didn't even notice the bit you pointed out, but looking back it's definitely "off." I can say for sure I've never thought this of the book before; maybe Willingham just had a bad day or something.

And yes, you probably could not have picked a worse time to decide to jump ahead of a trade...

Which pisses me off a bit, since I recall a lot of people and adverts touting this as a great "jumping on point". Hell, even the cover of no. 14 hypes "New Storyline!", and really what this feels like is "Last Storyline Part 2". That's fine for steady readers of the series, but new readers shouldn't be yanked around so.

I've read TPB no. 1, but apparently quite a bit if significant shit went down in the second story arc.

    Yes, definitely.

And a lot of shit went down in the storyline (2 issues, only) between the end of "Animal Farm" and the start of "Storybook Love." And the shit from Animal Farm and the shit from the other storyline (the name of which I can't remember right now) are both very important to this story.

Probably some stupid marketing decision, unconnected to the creative side of the book. Or so I'd prefer to think.

Not to worry, though...the Animal Farm trade is out this month sometime, so you can catch up soon.

I thought the second trade wasn't coming until September?

If it did come out his month, I'd be much happier, since I've decided to start collecting the actual issues.

So, does anyone know what issues the second trade collects? Because if it doesn't go all the way up to 14, I suppose I should grab the recent back issues...

    It's out the 23rd.
    And it collects issues 6-10.

What comes out in September is Fables: The Last Castle, which is the annual special about the Adversary and has something to do with the Alamo, apparently. The Animal Farm trade comes out this month and sports one of the coolest covers ever.

And I will note that when read as a whole, the series just keeps getting better. I think you will probably like Animal Farm more than the first arc, just because it tosses out so much weird stuff and so, so many great characters and concepts. And you will definitely find out what's up with Goldilocks when you read it.

In turn, I also thought the untitled caper story was better than Animal Farm, but that may just have been because it worked to expand the mythos and tighten character relationships, and of course, set up the Storybook Love arc.

I'd say it's more a fault of the marketing people that each new storyline is touted as a good jumping on point than Willingham's. He's trying to create an extended story that builds on what has past. It would be unfair to readers who have been there since the beginning to pander to people who haven't read what came before. In the same way, if I'm watching a movie and am an hour and a half into it, I'm not going to pause the movie and explain what has happened in the beginning everytime someone walks in. But that doesn't really have much to do with you, since I know you plan on reading the whole series anyway. But the thought just struck me.

Anyway, about the dialogue--I didn't notice anything stilted or wrong about it. If it bothers you, I'm sorry, but look how cool Bigby looks in wolf form.

    Yes, Bigby is cool.

But nobody says, "We've had it now!" as they crash down a mountainside. Trust me on this.

Okay, so I guess I should pick up issues 11 & 12 from the back issue rack and get the new trade, and I'll be all caught up. Sounds copasetic to me.
