Thread: What made you draw as a kid?

  1. #1

Question What made you draw as a kid?

I'm jsut curious. Was there anything that you really liked as a kid that made you draw? And is responsible for starting off your drawing skill? I always used to draw ninja turtles and ghostbusters while watching the shows. If it whern't for those I would suck now

For me, it was actually the LACK of cool stuff around that made me draw.

I always drew spacestations and pirates and monsters.
I used to think pirates where cool. Not anymore though. I've grown up.

Now I think Ninjas are cool.

Sure its a crappy cartoon by today's standards but does anyone remember The Godzilla cartoon by Hanna Barbera..After each episode i would spend hours trying to draw him..This was my earliest inspiration..It spread to other things later..Thank goodness

do you remember those old "how to draw dogs,boats,people..." There was a book for everything and they would show you the steps on breaking things down into shapes? Well I would get those from school when I was real young and just flip to the final produce and draw it just the way it was. For a second greader I wasn't bad. I dont remember drawing anything before that.

    I've always drawn.

Every project we did when I was at school - from the age of 5 - was always accompanied by the chance to draw.

If we studied red indians or vikings we drew them - and their boats - and houses - and animals etc

If we wrote stories of ANY kind - we always drew pictures to accompany them (when I was 8 or 9 our exercise books had lined paper on one side and plain on the other - for this purpose).

My teachers always said I was good and encouraged me a lot.
I was always given the task of drawing backgrounds for school plays etc.

Then when I was old enough that art became a 'proper lesson' and not just part a general class activity - I just took off and started drawing non-stop.

My dad always encouraged me and took me as far as he could in terms of technique -- but when he'd exhausted his artistic knowledge (by that I mean after he'd drawn a bi-plane, a dragster and my mum's face) I started developing on my own.

My first memory of something that made me want to draw was the old Sal Buscema and Ernie Chan run on the Incredible Hulk. Later, once I learned about the process of doing comics, I leaned that it was actually Ernie Chan (Chua) that inspired me since he took Sal's pencils and super detailed the musculature. And I have wanted to draw comics ever since.

I was an intraverted kid and my family moved around a lot... probably once every year or two on the average. When you move around a lot it's hard to make and maintain friends, so I would draw a lot.

The first time I can remember wanting to draw is when I saw my dad draw this car with teeth... I thought that was cool, so I drew one too.

exactly the same situation for me!
there were times when my pencil was my best friend!

fortunately the problem with lacking good friends has changed by now, but i do still enjoy to draw --- it's like liberating your mind.
