The first scene of episode 1, Obi tries to warn him of danger, so Qui-Gon quickly dismisses it as anxiety. Before you know it, surrounded by deadly gas and robots. Oops.
In Tatooine, Qui-Gon tries to use the Jedi mind trick to help gamble, and it doesn't work. The blue flying creature laughs in his face and can't even believe he's a Jedi. That's embarassing.
Lastly, despite Yoda's warnings, he chooses to go ahead and train Anikan anyways, and we all know what Anikan becomes.
It's no wonder why he got chopped in half and died in the ending.

In the expanded Star Wars universe, lots of non-humanoid creatures are immune to Jedi mind tricks. Like Jabba was in ROTJ.
