It's a fine ars student that has some complaints about the way people see fine art. It is on his web journal and when people in his class found out about it they took it to his instructors. They burned him badly. He really didn't say anything wrong and they gave him a really bad time about it. Its his web site and he doesn't even name names. they still chewed his @$$. It was a personal opinion and he basically lost a fight that shouldn't have even happened.
It's kind of crappy.

The ironic part of the story is that he was being ripped apart by ARTISTS about expressing his feelings. Now he feels that he can never express this thoughts or feelings again.

I guess that’s one way to educate someone.

I'm not surprized at all. I see this happen more often then not. especially with students of the 'fine arts'. Of course it was totally uncalled for, and devious, but that's all but a rite of passage for some art students. I remeber a skit from The State (you know it used to air on MTV back in the day), where they had the panel of museum heads-and the whole skit went around introducing them and their various backgrounds at the end the question was asked what is art? The reply- "Like paintings and stuff?" and boom there was the end of the skit. That to me is such a perfect example of how the fine art world operates (and thats why it was so damn funny). You can either prostrate yourself from instructor to instructor fine tuning your talent to their model and precariously buying into their views and rules governing what art should be. Its a system that does not go by the artwork itself but by people-who you know and how you know them. The end all is making expensive home decor for bored rich people looking for the next 'new' thing to crop up in the artworld. An artist can be an artists worse enemy, especially in the student/teaher relationship. I've seen art teachers (and professors) go out of their way to put down a certain student and then favor another, regardless of their skill or talent. A lot of young artists I know have suffered from this. More people have been detered from careers in art of more importantly just being artists not because they weren't good but because they had to deal with shit like this and didn't want to (or just couldn't). Your artwork is your expression, your own unique answer to the world, to yourself, and your constantly putting your heart and soul up for criticism which is difficult enough and then to be cut down about your personal opinion is just wrong. When i first entered artschool, at orientation we were told, you've made an incredible descision-you've chose to persue art, and this will be much more difficult then those people out there going to 'regular' college. It was completely true.
I don't know what else to say. I mean, I could go on and on about this but it would just be more angst then anything helpful.
