    In response to Genre...

In response to the other thread, about your favorite comicbook genre

I wanted to take it a step further. considering that *honestly, a measly* 36 people were able to vote. and that superhero's weren't the ultimate victor in the poll, I 'm curious as to why people aren't buying the comics that are released in their favorite genre.

Feel free to just click a response up top in the poll, or leave a message, below. But, this is posted as a discussion starter. Feel free to bring up any topics relevant.

It's believed that comics, aren't held as highly because of the industry's infatuation with superhero titles. Well, we know that first of all, no one is ultimately against superhero's seeing as a movie based on one, had the largest opening weekend in movie theatres, EVER! So, why aren't superhero's selling in the hundreds of thousands (or even better in the millions)?

If comics aren't selling because of the Superhero-specific focus, then why is it that when books in other genres do come out, they tend to fail?

That's what the purpose of this thread is about. I think that there are some decently intelligent people here. And even the ones that aren't that intelligent probably have an opinion...

    Let's here it!

I've recently picked up Arkanium and battle angle alita last order. I don't buy any superhero bull shit comics. I'll never like costumes and that "I have to save the day" attitude.

Here's how I buy comics. I only go for 100% So that means everything has to be good. the drawings/ stories/ etc.

so first off I look at the art. If the art isn't interesting, then there is no reason to read the story, and if so it's a damn shame that the story is good but has a bad artist.

Now the art's got my attention, so I pick it up, next if I read it and like what I'm reading, I'll probably pick up the next issue.

I hate the whole looking for crime to make the world a better place type of comic.

I have no favorite genre. If I like a comic, I like it. It's very subjective and if they happen to be of a certain genre I don't pay very much attention to it. As long as the art's good and the story flows it's my favorite 'genre'. heheh

I couldn't vote in your poll because I do buy comics in the genre I like. I love fantasy comics and CrossGen fits the bill perfectly there for me. I also buy Route 666 (and if you don't think comics can be scary, pick it up!) and I used to read Preacher when it was being published. I still think the main reason comics aren't doing that well is because they are marketed poorly... Marvel and DC are simply preacing to the choir with Marketing in Previews and comic stores. Again here's where CrossGen is doing the right thing with going to book stores etc. Going to where readers are, not just comic readers! The next step would be to advertise in popular magazines (how come I haven't seen a full page ad in EW or Rolling Stone) and on TV!! TV show advertise in comics, why not the other way around (a 30 second spot for Superman comics during Smallville or X-men comics during X-men: Evolution). That'll be the thing that gets more people reading comics I think. But I guess we'll see, won't we...?

I think the main reason why comic companies aren't putting any ads or commercials out there is because they can't afford to. Whenever a book gets some coverage in a magazine or newspaper, it's usually out of pure luck.

(Oh, and I didn't vote either, because I read all the comics I want to read and don't have a favorite genre.)

    poor rich kid :P

i didn't vote for the opposite reason, i don't have enough money to buy all the comics i'd like...though genre has absolutely NOTHING to do with it...i couldn't care less what a book is about, so long as it's done well and i enjoy reading it

    *ahem*

Let me clarify my original statement.

    I can't afford everything I'd like to read. . . But I read what I like and I like what I read.

But, you still don't dispute that you're a spoiled rich kid!?!

    Kidding.

Ok, so if EVERYONE is buying the books that they want, then why are so many genres still overshadowed by superheros? As we've seen in the slightly half-assed answered poll in the previous thread, that they are indeed NOT the most requested genre.

That's the truth I'm after here....

because that's what's out there...hell, there are TONS of books that i'd probably enjoy quite a bit, in every genre you can think of, but we're mostly exposed to superheroes, so that's easiest to reach

i tend to follow creators too, so if they happen to be doing heroes, then that's what i'll buy...sin city isn't superheroes, hellboy barely is, kabuki? not really...bu tit's all mainstream...well, mostly (i guess i should point out that i used superheroes interchangeably with "mainstream" because it does make up the majority of what's in the public eye)

blah, i'm tired, hopefully that post was worthwhile...
