Thread: Green Lantern WIP-Critique, PLEASE!

just from a pose point of view i think is left arm (our right) is in a very weak, static pose. it just seems to be there like you didn't know what to do with it! maybe have it bent and making a fist? tucked in beside his hip? just a thought!

I won't go over anatomy stuff, cause Carl did an exhaustive rundown already, but I will note something that I think is pretty major... dudes got no skin! You can clearly see the separation of each muscle, and it's insertion and origin. It's like looking at one of these

    instead of one of these

Remember that there's always a layer of skin, and, in this case, tights, that will soften the connections of the muscles. Having a knowledge of anatomy isn't just about knowing muscles, it's also knowing what you can leave out. I'm sorry if it isn't clear what I mean, I can do a draw-over if that will help.

The other thing that bothers me is that he's very ugly, in the face, that is. I don't mean to be harsh, but there's no two ways about it. If I saw this guy on the street, I'd turn the other way.

I did a quick sketch to show perspective and junk, I won't post it here since it has other stuff on it.

Great crit. I would also add that you are drawing the face without skin as well. You definitely have the talent to fix the problem.

While different Lanterns wear the ring on different hands, from what I can remember, it is usually always on the middle finger. Unless they don't have hands or fingers, and then it's just wrapped around a tail or a animal paw.

I edited your comments for brevity, no disdain intended.

Holy MOLY! In my defense, I DID say "within my limitations", and a bit of what you said is WAY over my head and my anatomical knowledge at this point. I WAS intending to pose in the mirror for the right arm, as I knew it looked wrong. (I even did so earlier today, and saw that I was WAY off). Just as a note, I'm still pretty weak in my understanding of the brachialis and coracobrachialis, even to the point of not being sure generally where they fit in or of their structure. I've almost NO knowledge of the skeleton, which apparently shows.

All that being said, I will TRY to make good use of your notes, but may certainly fall short. I really DO appreciate the time and effort you put in for such a thorough analysis. It's possible I'm enacting again what Popninja says is my "trying to fly before I can walk".

I'm not sure I agree, however "static and stiff" IS a weakness I tend toward in my drawings. My intent was that the left arm is counter-balancing his right, and you see that the fist IS balled, and I intended that it showed as tensed. The next crack at it I took, which started out as just a warm-up (I will post it below), you'll see that I DID play with that arm a little.

No harsh perceived. This is an intermediary step, and I would address BOTH issues with my final execution: too-delineated musculature, and the face (partly, I hadn't decided WHICH GL to depict yet, which also affects which costume).

But the over-depicting muscles IS a tendancy of mine, so I appreciate being reminded of it. It is, IMO, a by-product of how I construct my figures, and the fact that I'm still learning anatomy. As you noticed, I'm not so confident yet that I can "imply" rather than depict every detail.

    Thanks for the notes.

And thanks for the reference. I will archive that in my files.

Captain Broken Record reporting for duty!

"Static and stiff" you say? Hie thee to Costco and procureth thyself a big box of TWIST™. Walk Like an Egyptian is a great song and an hysterical SNL skit but, as you can see, falls flat in the funnies. Opposite limbs forward. If the the chest faces north/south, the hips face east/west. (ignore the Wolverine stuff, this was originally for another post)

C'mon Baby, let's do the Twist!

Is THIS the one you're referring to?

In any case, I will put it in this project's folder for reference. Thanks!
