    Inkworks!

Well it has been a long time. I thought I would get started with some inks. I have included the pencils to the first one and the last page is: John Byrne's, Doom Patrol. Thanks for taking the time.

great work! really nice lines! i'm not an inker but a few thinks jumped out at me!
gully-you removed the shading on the face!? if i had penciled this that would drive me crazy! also the inside of her glove on her back hand, you've kept the pencil marks there, where as you've changed it on her cape and top, i think in this case your own line work would work better as i think mad got a little lazy filling in that black area.
one of my favourite drawings! spent many hours drawing this over the years! you've done a great job on it!
spiderwoman- great line work on this, only thing that jumps out is her hair on the right hand side of the pic. a few more lines are needed on the outer part of the ringlets/strands as it looks like a shine with no outer/defining line at the moment, but thats a small niggle. very solid work!
doompatrol-great work on the figures! the skeleton in particular is fantastic! the only thing i don't like is how messy and rushed the roof looks. now i don't know byrnes work (i know i know! youngsters these days!) but is he one of the guys who left a lot up to the inker? because that roof needs a lot more detail and a lot less noise! other than that it's a great piece!
Overall fantastic work! love seeing pencils and inks beside each other!

Yeah, the MAD piece of Gully was pretty crazy. I am a penciler myself and I know what you mean and that was indeed a hard call to make. Allot of that works well with pencil shading–as he fully intended to do with that one. But somethings just don't convert well into lines. Given the expression on Gully's face and that she is a young girl, all the shading I tried just was destroying the entire story and feel of it. However I love to challenge myself by trying to convert shading into line like that. I guess I could had zippoed it... but since I was going for the pure line, I decided against it. Had it been a pro work I think I would have zippoed the shading and or consulted the artist on it, or perhaps given then a few versions and let them choose one.

I didn't really notice the hair on Spider-woman–since a big part of inking is the time you take doing it. But I fully agree.

Yup, Byrne usually inked his own stuff and he is really messy. I had to struggle with it myself but in the end I did decided to clean up allot of what he had done. I tired to keep enough so that it didn't lose the, Byrne feel.
    Thanks for the crits!

Thanks! I just started up again but I have been doing it for many years. I never wanted to do it professionally before–given that I really wasn't into the tools; as they were really hard to acquire and maintain. But now that digital tools are able to feel so close to their traditional counterparts I thought I would give it a go. So far I am completely happy with working digitally. It now feels like I am working with a brush.

Wow, that says a lot about your progress. I thought it was with done traditionally. Do you prefer that the pencils are tight? if not, could you post some where the pencils are more loose.

Thanks. I think that digital has come a long way. Basically I work the same as I have done traditionally so I think that is where the look comes from. I love the fell of working with brushes and now I can get that feel digitally.

I do like working with a tighter line, but I have done some looser things in the past with inking over sketches. I also really like the collaboration of inking and if the lines are too loose then you can kind of lose that feel since you have to put more of yourself into it. But I shall look for something that is more loose that I can ink up and post here.

Here is more MAD and a couple Adam Hughes.

The last AH! was a bit looser as it was more of a sketch.
